Gift cards as bridesmaids gifts?

Honeybee, on September 19, 2016 at 10:36 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 23

What are your thoughts on, instead of giving my bridesmaids actual gifts, presenting them with a cute thank you card from Etsy, and inside of the card, a $100 gift card to their favorite store? I have been having a hard time coming up with gift ideas. If I choose this route, I will begin purchasing the $100 gift cards slowly over time, since my wedding is a year away. I can buy one now, and then another one in a couple of months, so on and so forth. Or do you think an actual gift they can unwrap is better? My FH is getting his groomsmen watches. I have 5 bridesmaids.

ETA: I am going to get them a cutesy bridesmaid bag with their names personalized on it, that will include items such as bridesmaid flip flops, bridesmaid robes, some "emergency kits" for the day, etc, and inside I was going to put the thank you card with the $100 gift card. So they will still receive some personalized items, it's just that the actual "gift" won't be personalized other than it being their fav store

I mean this kindly, but I feel like that's a bit of a cop-out. If they're close enough with you for you to ask them to be BM's then the gift should be more personal than that.

I'm just having such a hard time being creative with this. You don't think the gift cards are just as nice as an actual gift?

IF you go the gift card route, give them $100 visa gift card. But I think you can be more creative with this and go the extra mile to do something special for them.

Personally I wouldn't mind, as I can't think of many typical BM gifts I'd actually be excited to receive. But I see what Mac means about them being impersonal.

I plan on giving a gift card to my MOH but it won't be the ONLY thing I'm gifting to her. I feel as though you could do a lot better than handing someone cash for people who will be standing by your side on your wedding day. You could probably do a lot better getting a bunch of inexpensive things that add up to $100. I don't think it's about having something to unwrap but about the thought put behind it.

I would much rather have a giftcard than something I'm never going to use again. Making it their favorite store would be personal enough for me. Nobodies going to complain about getting 100 bucks to their favorite store lol Most brides spend way less than that on bridesmaid gifts

Gift card that can be used as cash like visa or american express would be better than etsy in my opinion. Let them pick the stores to spend it at instead of limiting it only to one store.

If I was a bridesmaid I would be extremely excited about a $100 gift card. I think that's a great gift. Personally I'd like that over a bracelet or necklace.

ETA: you could maybe put the gift card in a cute makeup bag with like a few smaller things or something too? I personally love making up gift bags/baskets so that could be something easy to do!

My concern with gift cards is some of them have to be used within a certain time frame, usually a year from purchase date. So if you purchase them slowly it may not leave them much time or be valid still by the time they use it. I do agree that a gift card may not be the best BM gift. You have plenty of time to think of something.

I would not mind this at all.

I'm so over monogrammed totes and cups.

All those things you mentioned sound like props for your wedding. Do you know what your friends actually like? What their favorite stores are? What their favorite wine is?

If you're struggling that hard I'd say just do the gift card then.

Wait, the thank you note is from etsy, but the gift card is to their favorite brick-and-mortar shopping destination? I'd think that was pretty personal. Maybe even have a friend date with each one: take her shopping and hang out for a few hours catching up on what's been going on in her life while your brain has been in wedding mode.

I'm doing wine glasses. The stems are glitter with triple thick on top to make it feel smooth and I'm doing a monogram sticker on them if this would be something your interested in.

@LauraD, I'm not sure if it's different in different states, but I believe it is now illegal for a gift card to expire? I know some will start to deduct money if they aren't used...but even that I believe it's 5-7 years?

As far as gift card, I personally love Amazon because you can claim it right away and it's in the balance. Not sure if they are into that.

I am more of a spa girl so my friend got me a gift certificate the hot spring and spa when I was a BM. Had a great time the day after the wedding.
