Gift card shower...is that a thing?

I got an invite like that. I was so confused. They had us arranged by last names and if your name fell into a certain category, you had to purchase from that store. I was sooo confused because I wasn't sure what name they had and ...it was just off putting

Not a thing. I'd like to put on my rose-colored glasses and say, "The person who organized this shower was just trying to be fun and creative, and maybe they missed the mark a little, but it was with the best of intentions!"

But I'm not really very rosy. And I don't like having my gift-giving dictated to me.

I've heard of diaper showers for baby showers (where everyone is asked to bring a box of diapers), but I've never heard of a gift card shower.

Holy hell, no. The host doesn't get to tell guests the exact present they're giving! Never mind straight up asking for cash.

First of all, I have a problem with Facebook invites. It should have just said, "I don't really care if you come, but send money."

So you're invited to the shower and basically it's dictated what you give as a gift? Tacky isn't a strong enough word for this.

Yuck. Not only is the gift card shower tacky but I also think Facebook invites are tacky too

My bff and mom are doing my shower, and they're going to encourage people to buy my stuff online and have it shipped because I live on the opposite coast. But it's not a requirement. The gift card shower idea sounds tacky.
