Getting your ring reset

Kelsey, on March 19, 2016 at 2:26 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

So I found a wedding band that I am madly in love with, and we are all set to buy it, but the jeweler has said that it won't work with my current ring setting. I have a solitaire diamond with a six-prong cathedral setting. In order to make the wedding band that I want fit with my engagement ring, the jeweler wants to change it to a four-prong traditional setting. I love this wedding band and I know I will be wearing it for the rest of my life, but I am SO apprehensive about getting my engagement ring re-set. It's a very difficult emotional decision.

Have any of you had your engagement rings re-set/had the option to? Why or why didn't you?

The first jeweler FH took my e-ring to for sizing (it was my grandmother's) told him he would have to have it reset. He was apprehensive because he knew I did not want to change my grandmother's ring at all. After he proposed we took it to another jeweler & they were like, "that last jeweler was an idiot if he told you it needs reset." So here's a cautionary tale to ask around to experienced jewelers!

Eta- We are having my wedding band (great grandmother's) bent to curve around the setting of my e-ring. Seemed like the lesser of two evils to me to keep my e-ring setting.

Do you have pictures of the band and e-ring together as is? That seems crazy that you HAVE to change the setting. I couldnt imagine doing that. If you are in loVe with your engagement ring you may end up regretting getting it re-set.

What is the wedding band like?

Yes pics please. I actually have a six prong cathedral engagement ring setting too BECAUSE it seemed it needs to sit that high so that my wedding band (TBD - waiting on quotes) will sit flush against it.

Edit: *To sit flush since I wanted six prongs (more prongs to potentially cover stone imperfections!), and I agree with getting a second opinion if you can.

Just FYI, here's how my six prong cathedral sits - so it works well with most reasonable profile regular bands. But again we don't know what you have in mind.

I would be concerned about resetting my ring. I like the added security of my six prongs lol. Maybe get a quick second opinion?

6 prongs is more secure than 4, esp on larger stones, so I would be a tad concerned about the lessened security of only 4 prongs. Certain rings do only sit against 4 prongs because the 5th/6th prongs go out against the band. I would be sure to get a second opinion and then go from there.

Depending on the size of your main diamond I would be careful... the bigger the stone the more prongs you should have to keep it safe.... I would get the opinion of another jewler

This is the band style that I want. The problem is that the wrap parts would stand up very tall and poke way out the sides with the setting I have now.

@Kelsey that ring setting looks very similar to mine. The second jeweler I went to also talked to me about having the bands soldered together on the bottom & done so at an angle so that they would not rub against one another. I really loved that idea but want to be able to wear just my wedding band (I have specific reasons for this- i.e. work). I'll try to find a picture of what the jeweler meant with the soldering if you would like.

I have a cathedral setting as well.. I feel like even with four prongs that wedding band wouldnt sit right because of the slope of the engagement ring band. I honestly can't really see how that style will work for you.

@Kelsey I just got my ring black from being reset. My original engagement ring looked almost exactly like yours except it was rose gold. I always wanted six prongs so that's what FH got me. My ring ended up being a size too big so when I got it resized we decided to go down on the band width as well. The jeweler didn't tell me that they would have to change my ring to four prong though. I had no idea they had even done it until FH picked my ring up on Friday. However I love my ring even more now. I'm definitely glad we did it.
