Getting rid of old rings...

2ndtime1stwedding, on July 9, 2017 at 5:02 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

Married before... how in the heck do I get rid of the ring!? I've tried selling it locally and had FH do the deliver/collect and he almost got robbed. I've asked jewelry stores and I've been offered $500. Or $1500 off a $3000 purchase(sort of like a trade).

I paid $3100 for it and it's valued at $5500 with its certified card etc.

anyone got ideas??

I had the diamond in my old engagement ring made into a necklace for my daughter. I can't stand my ex but at least my daughter has something from her dad.

Ebay? Sell it for the gold?

You will not get anything near what you paid for it unfortunately. We paid $2200 for my previous ring on a huge sale, appraised at $3700. I was offered $300 cash which I obviously didn't do. I found a small local jeweler who let me trade in the ring for a 1.5 carat pair of diamond earrings, I had wanted to upgrade my diamond studs so I took the trade in. I found trade in to be the only way to recoup a decent amount of the money back.

I dont think anyone would buy a ring from a previous marriage..people believe in bad luck...maybe try making it into a necklace like thefuturemrswalker

It's 1/2 carat emerald cut center with halo diamonds around it and channel set diamonds down each side. Then the wedding band part is 11 channel set diamonds.

The $500 offer I got I feel like was a "we will take it apart" price.

Getting the stone removed was suggested by a jeweler but then I'd be spending $ instead of gaining. Then I got about 25-30 extra diamonds left over.

It was a 10 yr anniversary set I picked out myself. Marriage was over about 20 months after. Lol but I know people have mentioned the bad luck...

I may have to go to other jewelers to see about trades. I would be fine with some stud upgrades or other nice jewelry. But so far all I got offered was $1500 off a $3000 purchase.

I was told that basically anything under 1 carat in an individual stone is pointless for a jeweler to buy and any offer would just be gold plus a whatever they felt they might be able to use. Most will completely take it apart.

You're going to be disappointed to find that diamonds are not really an investment. They are a luxury. You won't see nearly your money back. FWIW the "appraisal" value is usually about twice of the "ticket" price. So your ring is probably worth around $1000 used. It might be best to try ring resale websites.

Get the best price for it and give the $ to a worthwhile charity. Make something positive out of something negative.

Not valuable but yet women still swoon over them for engagements. Lol I would have taken the $1500 offer I got if it was straight up cash-not an offer requiring me to spend an additional $1500 in store.

The resale value on rings isn't that high. Sentimentality counts for a lot of the value.

I sold the ring from my first engagement in 2010 when gold prices were sky high. I bought myself a fancy dinner in TriBeCa at a restaurant that has since closed because of rent hikes (lol)

Family member & her FH tossed their rings from previous marriage into the bay. LOL I pawned off any jewelry from my ex. At the time, selling on Craigslist wasn't productive for me.

When I buy anything now from FB groups, I meet at a local Kwik Trip gas station.

Try third party selling online, like eBay. Some people are superstitious but more people are rational and won't think about bad luck. You also don't necessarily have to say why you're selling it, just say "diamond engagement for sale" and if anyone asks say you don't want it anymore. We bought mine at a pawn shop for a steal and the broker never gave me a history besides to was brought in a year back

I have several rings that I used to wear and a couple that were my moms. Finally decided I am going to take them to a jewelry designer and have a wedding band designed to match my engagement ring (we just bought a plain white gold band for now) and another one to wear on my other hand.

Diamonds are literally worth nothing, and gold isn't priced high right now either.

I'd take the $1500 off $3000 and get yourself or your FH something nice.
