Getting ready takes how long?

Rebecca, on November 5, 2019 at 9:02 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 12
I had to fire my photographer it’s $400 total that I am wasting now for canceling her but it needed to be done. So I’m on the search for another one. I wanted full day coverage but as I have been taking to a few they mentioned I might not need full day because getting ready doesn’t always take as long as you think. I have a 3 person bridal party, myself and our two moms to get ready. I don’t wear a lot of makeup and my FSIL who is a BM will be doing our hair (she’s a stylist). How long do you say it normally takes to get ready. How early before the ceremony start should I start getting ready?

There are many factors: What is your makeup process? Are you doing your makeup, someone else or a professional MUA? What about everyone else and their makeup process? Also, what about your hair? My hair will already be done going into getting dressed. My makeup will be done professionally and will take 45 minutes. I have four girls who all need to get their makeup done by another MUA. Same time frame. That's about 2 girls an hour. Then, of course, getting dressed. So, I'm looking at 3.5 hour total.

I've given us about 2 hours and 15 minutes on the schedule to get ready/eat lunch. I don't expect it to take quite that long, but I'd rather over budget than under budget our time. I'm having my hair done, but other than that everyone will be doing their own hair and makeup. I have the same sized bridal party as you, 3 bridesmaids and two moms. None of us are particularly high maintenance, aside from FMIL. Since we are doing about half of our photos before our 3:00 ceremony, I'm planning for everyone to be ready about an hour and a half before the ceremony.

It’s just my sister doing my makeup (1 hr)
going to a salon to get my hair done (1 hr, + 20 min drive time)
    12 min drive to venue
For steaming my dress, de-static, get in dress and “get ready photos” before first look, I have 15 minutes planned.

I had a 4 person bridal party. I did my own makeup but had hair professionally done. One of my bridesmaids did the other girls’ hair and makeup (though, she did her own before she arrived, so I guess this timing was only her doing hair and makeup for 3 girls). But we got ready in 2.5 hours 🤷🏻‍♀️ I woke up at 9:15, my girls came over at 9:30, my makeup was done by 10, hair was done by 11:30, then getting my dress on and photos until 12.

Was it rushed? YES. Would I recommend doing it in 2.5 hours? Depends on the timing of your wedding... if I had a 4pm wedding or something I definitely would’ve left myself more time. I think just having 3 hours would’ve been perfect honestly. But since I had a noon wedding and I am NOT a morning person, I knew allowing myself the extra sleep was more important than the extra time to get ready. And everything got done in time, so it worked out just fine!

If you only have one person doing hair, I would expect at least 30 min per person for hair, plus time for her to get her own hair and makeup done. That would be the minimum. Always good to have an extra 30-60 min cushion. You could have a photographer come towards the end of getting ready instead of having them there the whole time.

We had 14 people getting hair and makeup done and I needed to be getting in my dress at 1:30pm for a 4pm wedding. We started getting ready at 7am. Photographer arrived at 12:30 or 1.

I'm obviously not there yet, but I'm setting my timeline based on my hair and makeup trial. It took almost 2 hours to do my hair and makeup. My girls will most likely be doing their own makeup, but get pro hair. So I'm thinking we need 3 hours at least, knowing that the hair gal is going to bring a second person.

But my first look isn't until 2pm, with the ceremony at 4pm. So, I'll get to sleep in a little bit, and have a relaxed morning, rather than a rushed morning.

I am getting my hair and makeup professionally done, and so are my bridesmaids! We will start getting ready at 8AM to be ready by 2PM. I thought this was an insane amount of time, but I even had to pay a little extra to get an extra person to bump the time back to 8AM. I'm hoping everything goes well and it is just stress free and not rushed with that much time!

My wedding was set to start at 3:30. We started hair and make up around 10 (4 of us for hair and make up, plus 2 moms for hair only), and finished around 2 (2 hair stylists and 1 make up artist) BUT we didn’t start “getting ready” photos until about 2. So, they’re not hair and make up photos, but general hanging with the girls, a couple last minute bridesmaids dress steaming, getting into dresses and seeing eachother dresses up for the first time, and adding accessories. So, you don’t really need *all* the getting ready moments photographed. My photographer specifically suggested we wouldn’t really want *pre* make up photos , and if we wanted “make up photos” she could do pictures of the last minute touch ups— a final lipstick application, etc, versus the bare-faced just woke up look of the morning. So she probably got about an hour of getting ready candids, but, they didn’t cover our whole getting ready experience. Worked fine, I have plenty of getting ready photos!

Thank you! This helps me so much. Obviously we all want to capture every mom one of our special day but in reality how much of it needs to be documented when you are getting ready. Thanks again.

We have 5 bms + myself; we are planning 7 am - 11:30pm for getting ready (we have a bunch of photos to take before the ceremony so that we only have to do group photos and photos of just us!). Our photographer is going to duck in to get a few pictures and then head to our venues so that she can get photos of everything before people show up so we can pictures of everything "pristine" Smiley smile

We got ready from 10 AM - 4 PM but our photographer got there at 3 PM (ceremony at 5 PM). It gave her more than enough time for getting ready pictures without being at our wedding for 13 hours.
