Getting married on Juneteenth?

Casey, on June 11, 2020 at 9:10 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 8

I had to postpone my wedding from September until June 19, 2021 which was the date the venue had available. With all the protests and black lives matter movement, I’m now worried about getting married on Juneteenth (which I admittedly did not think about when we confirmed the new date.) We are both white. Is this insensitive to get married on this day?

I wouldn’t think so. It’s no different than getting married on Christmas or Independence Day.

I wouldn’t think so either. I don’t think everyone automatically associates that date to what you’re thinking, ya know?

I don't think so. I agree with Melle that not everyone knows the significance of that date, even though they really should. If we were in that situation, we would donate to BLM or a bail/legal fund in lieu of favors to acknowledge and show respect.

Thank you all for responding! I definitely didn’t want to do anything insensitive or take away anything from that date. The donation is a great idea

I wouldn't think it offensive at all. Unless it's at a plantation or historically offensive site, it's just another date to get married. My Black grandparents were married July 4th for no other reason than it was an available date. I hope you have a wonderful wedding on Juneteenth!

Fellow Juneteenth 2021 wedding here! I had the same thought and I’m relieved after seeing the comments. I love the idea of a donation. Happy almost-one-year-til-the-big-day Smiley smile
