Getting married in Catholic church that isn't your home parish

Hey everyone! My FH & I are both Catholic, and though we haven't been the greatest Catholics in the last few years, we want to get married in a church, specifically, my grandmother's church. To us, it's not really about religion; it's about the significance of the church, as my parents, grandparents & great grandparents got married there. We live in NYC & the church is in my hometown of Buffalo, so we're not parishioners & have to go through a bit more to get married in this church. They want proof of our sacraments, pre-cana and proof that we're Catholics "in good standing" in the form of a letter of recommendation from our home church. We currently don't have a home church and are in the process of finding one. We've been told that won't be a problem.

My question is: do you think a church will hold it against us that we live together? Will this priest that does not know us refuse to marry us? What should I expect meeting with the priest in Buffalo & one at my new church in NYC?

I am also getting married in a Catholic Church that I didn't belong to. I was really worried about this also but our priest was actually very nice and helpful, he was so honored that we chose his church, but my home parish priest would have not been welcoming so it depends a lot on the personality of the priest. I would recommended setting up a meeting and sort of feeling him out. FI and I decided unless it was brought up we would avoid the topic all together but we ended up registering there and without even asking he just assumed we lived together.

So definitely set up a meeting and kind of feel him out and see if you can get around it without saying you already live together, or even finding out that he doesn't even care!

    Good luck!

My parish knows me and fh live together and the priest has agreed to marry us.I think it depends on the church/father Ours feels that we are trying to be better Catholics , we did however have to complete our confirmation we both needed it and we attended precana and meetings with the priest

To be honest it depends on the specific church and the priest.

Thank you for the responses!! I think my concern is definitely convincing two new priests that we're still good Catholics and good people, even though we haven't gone to church often and live together. (Both if us attended Catholic school our whole lives, too.)

I think the priest we want to marry us is more conservative than the ones at the church we want to join, but we also live together because NYC is expensive and we knew we wanted to save for a wedding. I think I'm just nervous in general because I don't really know what to expect!

I grew up Catholic, and it really depends on the priest. There are two Catholic churches in my town, one is known as the "uptight church" and then other is known as the "liberal church". One doesn't mind if you live together, the other literally refuses (I talked to the priest and this was the wording he used) marriages from people who live together. However, don't lie about living together before marriage.. my FMIL said we could just not tell them.. which goes against everything. What a way to start a marriage. Just be honest and open with the priest and ask that parish's beliefs on the matter. To be frank, because of what they are asking you to provide, I would say this church is more on the uptight church, but you never know if you don't ask!

I was wondering about the fact my DH and I lived together prior. We are very involved with out church but our living together has not been an issue at all for us, but my understanding is that it can very by church/priest. Our Priest though was even supportive of having a civil ceremony on TV in NYC first (he even joked he wished he could have made his vows in NYC haha) and having the church ceremony after. I think, especially in terms of living together, the church has been more open and want to help guide to completing the sacraments in the church.
