Getting married in a different state

Noelle, on November 3, 2017 at 7:34 PM Posted in Planning 0 9

How difficult is it to get married in a different state? We live in South Carolina but I want to get married in the smoky mountains.

Most states have their information on how to get a marriage license and who can officiate online.

    Tennessee

We live in New England now, but grew up in and are getting married in Ohio. It's challenging to plan from far away at times, but many people have destination weddings these days. Be strategic about planning and if you can take a few long weekends to see venues and meet vendors, that could be helpful, but if not, with technology as it is, it's doable to not visit. My best advice is to have a longer timeline so you'll have more time to do more in depth research.

And of course, as PP said, check the marriage license rules for the county so you'll know when you can apply for a license and what paperwork you'll need.

I live in KY on the border of OH, and I am getting married in OH because literally all the venues are closer to me than the KY ones. It isn't difficult at all. We just apply for our license in that county. The only weird thing was that our minister had to become ordained in Ohio since his was only good for KY and IN.

Its not hard. Pick good vendors, get the goods on your license and who can marry you, and enjoy. We've married people from all over the world in NYC and NJ!

We live on a state line and when I looked into this the only thing I could find was a slightly increased fee for non-residents. Like a $5 difference. This wasn't the case in all counties though.

We live in IL and are getting married in CO. We have to get a marriage license within 30 days of our wedding and that's it, no waiting period.

In FL, the fee is the same whether you're a resident or not. But, residents have a 3-day waiting period and non-residents do not.

I marry couples from all over the US and all over the world. We make it work!

We live in IN, got married in WI. It was fairly easy. Research the states legal requirements and make sure you have an officiant who is legal there.

We got married in DE while living in AZ. We researched the rules pertaining to applying for a marriage license well in advance, so it was no big deal. I knew about how many trips I'd be taking to the area throughout the process of planning the wedding, so I mapped out from the beginning which things were most important for me and DH to do in person and which trips those things needed to happen in order to make it possible for us to do the things in person that we felt were a priority. I had a great email relationship with most of our vendors to take care of anything else. My parents also lived in DE, so they offered to go see a vendor in person between my visits if it was ever necessary, and I shopped everything I ordered for the wedding to their house so it would already be in DE for the wedding.

There were a few times where it was frustrating that I couldn't be there in person as much as I wished I could, but I would say that overall, it was a positive experience.
