Getting married before my DW

Chello, on July 16, 2017 at 2:31 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

What is your opinion on getting married before your destination wedding. Right now me and FH are looking at a few in Maldives it would strictly be ceremony so we would have to get married here regardless but in Bali you can't get legally married unless the bride and groom share a religion. Catholic and Christian not being able to get married. FH is from Korea and so is his family so we found in Bali which cater towards Korean customers which is what we are leaning towards. I've seen a lot of discourse on other blogs especially if you don't tell your guests calling it a sham wedding but I don't feel as if I need to disclose this to them. Others said that if I want a DW then I should go through the legality of said country and not for a PPD. Thoughts

My fiancé and I are planning a DW as well. We plan to get married legally at a courthouse.

There are so many factors that go into marrying in another country. I'd forgo that mess and marry before. In this case, it is not a sham, it's just smart.

Can you just have the wedding here and go on a honeymoon there? Make it simple on yourself...

It was a lot of drama and this was the best option. At first we decided to have two weddings but both my mom and fmil wanted to have the quote "official wedding" and when we announced our engagement we had a large guest list with people with almost certainty would go we decided a neutral place. It's a seven hour flight from Korea and a 17 hour from California where my family lives and when we told them about some of the locations people all agreed that was fair but of course that was before we knew about legal requirements.

Do it. We're having to do it too because of wait lists and holiday closures. If you're worried about people judging you for being "already married," do the courthouse when you return. It's so much easier and people that would for saving yourself heartache and stress by doing a courthouse before/after the ceremony aren't people you need in your life anyway

I'm getting married the month before our actual ceremony. Its cheaper, smoother, and less stressful to have it done at the courthouse before the DW. I agree with Amber, It's not a sham, it's smart.

Most couples do get married legally before a DW that's out of the country. So there's nothing wrong with that, and you don't have to disclose anything about it to anyone.

Most people do this; it's not a big deal.

I didn't know this was a thing (marrying locally n then a DW afterwards). Do you tell your guests? I think I might be pissed to spend that much $ to attend a DW n not to have told they are already married. I'd suggest either be upfront or marry local n have a great honeymoon.

I wouldn't say it's a sham but just respectful to tell your guests. Maybe explain the reasoning on your wedding website?!?

    Here we go again.

You should get married here. If you're going to live in the USA for any period of time, it's far easier to have your license originate here.

Thanks for the help. We've decided to get married here and were excited about getting married in Bali so we're going next month to pick out venues
