Getting in Shape

Erin, on September 18, 2019 at 4:52 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 21
My wedding is in a year and a half. I used to be in really good shape, but after I moved and then got pregnant, and then 2 years of caring for an infant and now toddler largely by myself, I’ve let myself go. I can honestly say I’m in the worst shape of my life, and it’s showing in my self-confidence, and how I feel when I look at myself in pictures including those where I’m in my dress.

I’m not looking to lose a whole lot of weight, as I’m still a size 2, but I want to build my strength and tone back up.

Does anyone one have any recommendations for exercises that have worked for them? I’m a big runner, but that’s hard to do with a 2 year old xD I have some free weights at home that I can use as well, I just am really out of practices and don’t remember what workouts really worked in the past.

i need help D:

Since you’re a runner, do you have a jogging stroller? I had one when my son was little, and it was awesome for both of us. He was heartbroken the year he was too big to fit in it and was told he couldn’t come. I got mine at a yard sale super cheap and it looked like it was never used.

I've been doing a lot of these type of toning workouts where you can do at home and don't need anything:

    https://www.bicycling.com/training/amp29039636/abs-circuit-8-minute-workout/

That and I've been doing planks where I increase the amount of time I plank per day

I do have one, but she’s 25 lbs now and I’m so out of shape I couldn’t run for more than like... a mile with it without wheezing (I still blame the Colorado altitude sometimes 🙃)

My son is a tank, and I guarantee you get used to the weight. So just start walking and work up to that run. You gotta start somewhere, and something is better than nothing! I loved the bonding time with my son when we went out, so even if that’s all you get out if it I totally would try!

If you can, get a beach body account. I’m in a similar boat with my shape.. but that was really helpful for me. There are work outs lasting 30 minutes to an hour and even doubling programs helped me previously.

About how much does that cost? We’re on a fairly tight budget at the moment, bt if it’s reasonable I might be able to convince him it’s worth it.

To be honest I’m not too sure but it’s for a few months at a time so the longer your buy it for the cheaper it is per month.

I downloaded the beachbody app on my Apple TV and there are a ton of different workouts for all different skill levels. It’s helped me build more muscle over the past few months. And for me it’s a little easier than going to a class at the gym because I feel less competitive with just myself so I’m okay modifying some moves if I need to.

It’s $14.99 for a month, or $39.99 for 3 months or $99.99 for a year. I believe they give you a free week or two to try it out.

Like Kelly said, it’s a little easier then taking actual classes and there are so many different programs to choose from you could always pick and choose or double programs.

Sounds like you should try weight training! Instead of basing workouts on cardio, base them around weight lifting. There are tons of workouts on the internet to try. If you’re looking for a at home program, beach body has some good ones.

I’ve been doing Fit Girls Guide. Their e-books are $20 and then you can stay accountable on Instagram if you choose. All their exercises can be done without the gym if you don’t have access or just want to do it at home. I’m also a size 2 and don’t want to lose numbers, but this program has helped me get in shape so well. It includes a meal plan, cardio, and body weight exercises.

There are so many videos on YouTube! I teach Zumba and tabata. Tabata is high intensity interval training where you do 8 reps of one exercise for 20 seconds with a 10 second rest and you can choose what exercise you want to do for each rep depending on what you want to tone. Check it out on YouTube.

Compound workouts are also good if you have free weights. For example, you can squat and as you come up use the weights to do a shoulder press so you’re working out more than one part of your body. Good luck!!

I’m a huge runner too and I manage to stay in decent muscle toned shape with good old fashioned push ups, sit-ups, dumbbells for biceps triceps and flys. Buy a bar set of weights from Walmart and get some deadlifts and squats. Kettle bell swings. Do 50 of all 4-5 days a week BEFORE you run distances of 9 miles or less. Longer runs, skip the weights and just do push-ups/sit-ups. Look in YouTube for some good dumbbell and abs routines.

I lost 15 lbs in 6 months. I wasn't really unhappy with my weight, I more just wanted to tone up & be stronger. I cut out soda, desserts and creamer in my coffee and stopped eating out. I took HIIT classes twice and week then used the Tone It Up app at home the other three days. Plus I walked at least 3 miles every weekend. I felt like I lost weight & gained muscle, I was really happy on our wedding day.

I joined a local CrossFit gym and I absolutely love it. Been an athlete all my life, but without the structure of sports/lifting it was hard to hold myself accountable. I'm also a runner and still cross train with outdoor runs.

If you're looking for a cost effective way to find at-home workouts, I highly recommend looking on instagram! I still follow a bunch of accounts where people post multiple workout videos each week. Best part is it's 100% free lol
