Getting discouraged with hmua

Kerin, on June 24, 2020 at 4:28 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 19

I booked my HMUA three months ago and I'm super excited to work with her, but our wedding is on the other side of our state, roughly 3.5 hours away from me. I work M-F until 5(ish), so getting there on a Friday for my trial run is impossible. I've asked about 2 different Saturdays now, and I'm told she's already booked. First I asked about September, the response was "September and October are both fully booked", which is fine, I get it and that's awesome that she's in demand. So I asked about a Saturday in November, and was offered Sunday instead.

I've already told them in the beginning that my fiance is a semi driver so, on Sundays, I'm on the road taking him to where he had to park, which 90% of the time is another 2 hours from where the wedding is happening.

I'm not upset that the particular Saturdays I've asked about were already taken, but tell me when she's available instead of making me shoot in the dark over it Smiley sad the other issue is there are 3 people over my "account", so not sure which one is answering at any given moment and if they've shared the information among themselves...so this whole thing could just be lack of communication between them. Smiley sad

I'm starting to freak out that I'm going to have to skip the trial run and just hope and pray I look halfway decent on my wedding day Smiley cry

Is there another hair and make up artist you can find that's more local to you?

It wouldn't make sense since the wedding is there, I need someone who can do it the day of the wedding, too. I'm sure I'm not the only person in the world with this issue, especially people with destination weddings and such. i'm just really down about it right now.

Our wedding is about 3 hours away from our home too, and rather than stress about finding someone willing to do it early morning I decided I can do it myself. I’ve been playing with different products and splurged on some higher quality stuff than I would normally buy. I’ve also watched lots of tutorials on YouTube and have a friend who is a cosmetologist and made some recommendations (unfortunately she moved out of state). If you’re going to DIY, definitely go several trial runs, its really up to you how confident you feel about doing it. The benefit is, the money you spend on products isn’t a single use.

Thanks, Jessica. I have no idea what I'm doing so I'm just down about it. I'll look at youtube. Thank you for the advice.

I understand, besides it’s nice to get Pampered sometimes and you’ll have enough in your mind that day. I hope you can work out a day for a trial!

There are a ton of channels, the ones that come to mind right now are Allie Glines & Tati Westbrook.

If she's not responsive in giving you the info you need or being available when you are, maybe look for an alternative beautician who is more reliable/communicative. If she can't work with you at this point, I would be concerned that she wouldn't be available for the wedding day.

I’m sure this is frustrating (I’m feeling very similarly trying to do a trial when living in different state from my wedding!) but I don’t think she is being unreasonable. You are only giving her one day of the week to work with, and with weddings just starting up again it’s really not surprising that she is booked every Saturday. She was trying to work with you by offering Sunday, but I think she is hoping you will get the hint that Saturday isn’t going to happen without having to confront you on it.
FWIW, many HMUAs will only do trials M-Th so this is a pretty common challenge.

Thank you, Jana. She finally got back to me with a solution. I'm going to wait until the beginning of January for my trial run. It'll still be 5 weeks before the wedding. Smiley winking

I'm sorry, have you asked if there is an appointment in the weekday maybe towards the end of the day where you can maybe do a 1/2 shift. I do this for my doctors appointments and it works out for work and me.

It's a 3.5 almost 4 hour drive to the other side of the state, so I can't be there during the week.

I asked her for a list of the open Saturdays she has and, the day after I posted this, she answered, so we were able to work it out. The only reason we're getting married there is that is where our grown kids and grandbabies live, and it's hard for them to take time off, so we're bringing the wedding to where they are so they can participate in it.

It's all working out, just depressing for a little bit. Smiley winking

That's been the hardest thing with wedding planning - trying to coordinate these things with your work schedule plus the busy wedding season.

Honestly, if they aren't willing to accommodate you, I think personally I'd cancel and either find someone else or do it yourself. Do you have a friend that enjoys doing makeup? Maybe you could reach out and ask them to help you out? I've done that for a few friends over the years.

I love doing make-up and thought about paying someone to do mine, but the rates I was quoted for not only a weekend, "holiday" weekend, "after hours", etc. I decided I'd do my own. The HMUA would've cost double my officiant, dress, and rings. - Totally not worth it in my book.

Agreed! at least this part is finally nailed down. I think the only things I have to worry about now are getting my DIY projects done timely and being on time with the vendor payments!

I do have a backup plan...my sister doing my hair and doing my makeup myself, I just am not confidant in making it look the way I want, so I will need to do some trial and error. HMUA did reach back out, so I have a trial date picked, which relieved a lot of the stress.

Youtube if you're not "makeup savvy" - Don't be afraid to practice your makeup for your "work" days or weekends - that's what I do. People may look at you funny for suddenly having a different look, but I just tell them the truth and we all giggle. Smiley smile
