Getting a marriage license from a different state...

Kayle, on June 18, 2011 at 11:08 PM Posted in Planning 0 9

I would like to obtain my marriage license from Vermont or Connecticut, but I don't want to have my ceremony there. I live in Alabama and same-sex marriage is not legal. My family cannot afford to travel to a ceremony in Vermont or Connecticut. Is there some way I can get my license there, but have my ceremony in Alabama?

Why can't you have the real and legal ceremony in vermont with just the two of you or a few friends and family. then have a ceremony of dedication in front of everyone.

I don't knot about those states, but here you have to get a marriage liscense from the county that you are getting married in. To do what you are wanting to do, you would have to get the licenses and have the judge marry you to be legal, then have a ceremony with your family after.

You will not be able to do what you stated. You have to obtain the marriage license from the state and county that you plan to get married in. No way around that.

That's what it looks like we might have to do, because the in few states where we can get married, the license is only valid within that state. I can't decide if I want to have the ceremony before or after we're legally married. Thank you for your advice.

I'd recommend having your legal ceremony in VT or CT (leaves should be turning by 10/8). Then when you get home to AL, have a reception with family & friends.

We were in a similar situation. We ended up having a very small ceremony in Massachusetts, then having a much larger reception back home.

I agree, just have a few people go with you but have a big shabang when you get back... I hate that you can't legally get married in Al Smiley sad

    Hi Kayle,

How did things turn out? My husband and I wanted to get married (in Vermont) a couple of months before we could pull together a wedding, so we had a very short (5 minute) city hall ceremony and then later had a real wedding (ceremony and all) in front of our friends and family.

Generally in Vermont, you can't just go to a city hall and walk out married - you need to bring a Justice of the Peace or ordained minister.

Let me know if you need help getting in contact with these people or hiring a photographer for an hour to capture the moment for your friends and family!

    Best,

    Hannah
