Gender neutral proposal box for child

Kelly, on March 14, 2022 at 10:58 AM Posted in Planning 5 12

I need ideas for what to put into a proposal box for a child that doesn't exist yet. I'm going to give the box to my sister (MOH) for certain reasons. I know it's not necessary, but it'll be fun for me and mean a lot to her. The other proposal boxes (all for adults) will have wine, a succulent candle, a pencil case, and cookies. For the child's/my sister's box, I'm thinking apple juice and baby snacks. Any other thoughts? The box is really for my sister so it doesn't all have to be baby stuff.

What do you mean "doesn't exist yet"? Is the child not born? Is the wedding not planned yet?

My sister isn't pregnant yet, so there is no child. She's trying to have one. It's a weird situation.

What will you do if she doesn't have the baby in time for your wedding? I would just never plan around someone else getting pregnant. You never know what could happen.

Her baby won't be in the wedding because it would be too young anyway. I'm just trying to include her because she'd appreciate it. It's odd I know, but I'm just trying to figure out what to put in the box.

Babies won't drink apple juice until a long time from now. Like age 2 or so, generally.

If you really really think this is a good idea, then maybe pick a cute onesie and some baby socks.

I would be extremely careful around giving baby gifts to someone who isn't pregnant. Like, what if she has trouble conceiving or has a miscarriage?

As someone who really struggled to get pregnant with my first child, this would have torn me apart. Obviously you know your sister best so maybe she’d be fine with it, but unless she’s already pregnant, I think this is insensitive at best and totally offensive at worst.

Sarah I'm sorry to hear that. I didn't even think of this. I just wanted to maker her feel included even though she doesn't have a kid yet. Maybe I'll wait until she does to give her the box.

Thanks. I know nothing about babies. As I just replied to Sarah, I hadn't considered that and may wait until she has a baby to give her the box.

Totally agree with this. I have an infant now, but I struggled to get pregnant and it ultimately took us nearly 2 years to finally conceive. You don't know what is going on behind the scenes with your sister. I would have been torn apart inside if I received a proposal box like this

Yeah this is a good point. She just started trying so it didn't occur to me that this might be a problem. I'm going to wait until she has a baby to give her the box.

Thanks for all of your responses! Obviously there's a lot I hadn't thought of, so I'll wait until my sister has a baby (if she does) before giving her the box. I wasn't trying to be insensitive, I just didn't know. I appreciate the feedback!

Just an update: I did do a box for my sister. She thought the box was funny and cute. She appreciated that I wanted to include her future child. It really came down to me knowing my sister and family dynamics.
