Gelato/ Ice Cream Bar Instead of Cake?

Karla, on November 30, 2022 at 4:52 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 7

My fiancé and I have been looking for cake alternatives (we just aren't cake people). We found a company that caters/ serves ice cream and gelatos to your guests in cups or waffle cones. I absolutely love this idea (see picture). However, my mom keeps saying that there's no wedding without cake and that it would be weird to just have ice cream. Thoughts? Do I NEED a cake?

Cakes aren't necessary unless you want to do some type of cake cutting. For example, my brother and his wife got a very small cake for their cake cutting but then guests had their choice of two different flavors of ice cream cake. My brother-in-law and his wife had a huge donut made that they cut for cake cut then guests had their choice of all different types of donuts.

I got married successfully with no cake!

I’d say you need dessert. But it doesn’t need to be cake. Gelato/ice cream sounds amazing— I’d be thrilled to be at that wedding!
Also, you can make a photo op moment out of anything. We skipped any sort of “cutting” but you could have a cute moment like an ice cream scooping or something , maybe he scoops your flavor and he scoops his sort of thing? (Of course, that might depend on the vendor/sanitation restrictions!)

You could always request some cake-flavored gelato for Mom.

Gelato sounds like a great idea! I am sure you won't be the only ones who aren't cake people. And you can't always please everyone! If you like gelato, go for it.

I also got married successfully without a cake. We had pies and doughnuts - but ice cream/gelato sounds delightful!

I think gelato sounds like a fun idea! You could do an ice cream scoop thing like McSkipper mentioned, or even feel each other a spoonful of ice cream if you still wanted to do the "feeding each other" thing. Just make sure the gelato isn't as hard as a rock and impossible to scoop lol.

Then Mom's going to say you need coffee to go with that cake or "it's not a wedding". Serve what you like. There's always a joyous photo op. Dessert is definitely a creative way for a couple to express themselves. My husband and I fed each other macarons.
