Gay Modern Wedding in the Hudson Valley- Got any unique venue ideas? (paging Celia)

Chris, on May 13, 2017 at 6:50 PM Posted in Planning 0 38

Hi All,

My partner and I are looking for a venue for our wedding. We live in the Hudson Valley area in New York. All the venues we have been checking out for our wedding are either very traditional (hotels/gardens/barns/etc.), not gay friendly (one site told us directly that they weren't the right venue for a gay wedding), or very very expensive. We are looking for a non-traditional, gay-friendly, and affordable place to get married. An urban-loft modern feel would be great... Or something that would be unique enough to have people talking for a while... My partner and I are very artistic and could be very creative with the right canvas. Any ideas for a venue in the Hudson Valley? We'd love to hear your thoughts... Thanks!

I'm sorry a venue told you they wasn't right for a gay wedding

A wedding is a wedding no matter who is getting married at it

What kind of crap is that?

    1. Any venue that tells you they aren't the right place for a same-sex wedding should be reported. That's illegal in New York.

    2. What about a museum?

Thanks for your thoughtful responses. We were thinking about a museum... Specifically we were looking at the Dia in Beacon, NY- a modern art museum, but unfortunately they don't do weddings. We also looked into Storm King Sculpture Garden, but it was a bit pricey and they seemed to have a lot of rules to use their space. Does anyone know of other museums in the area that would permit a wedding? We were also looking at Urban-inspired places like the Senate Garage in Kingston...but it was WAAAYYYYYY too expensive!

I would add the words 'paging Celia' to your post. She can probably suggest lots of venues for you as a valued officiant on WW.

I'm so sorry that anybody was rude to you because it was an event. I wouldn't have my wedding there but I'd report them.

I found one place that's like a HUGE blank canvas and it is pricey in my opinion but very nice. This website also has lots of other non traditional venues. https://www.peerspace.com/pages/listings/577e65de7cdf7209005e7f11?sort_order=3

Ugh I can't help but I just wanted to say I'm so sorry you had to deal with ignorant vendors.

You can try restaurant buyouts or art galleries.

Add paging Rachel/Centerpeice Florals to your subject title. She's from the area and might have suggestions.

That attitude makes me sick, honestly.

I don't do a lot in the Hudson Valley, not because I don't want to, it just doesn't happen. But if you can live with NJ....part of the problem though, is that these spaces are not cheap and they usually come with zero in terms of furniture. You're also looking at a prime time of year.

    But having those caveats in mind;

    Loft 220 in Passaic

    Montclair Museum of Art

Morristown Museum (I love both of them)

Departed Soles Brewery in Jersey City

Pacem in Terris in Warwick (this might take a sales job on your part, but it's an amazing space)

Unitarian Society of Ridgewood (a big white and wood room with a fireplace)

Fish Urban ; a cool restaurant built in an old bank. Yes, you can have your party in the vault

    San Cubano in Weehawken

Alpine Boat Basin in Alpine (this is an outdoor pavilion built into the cliff on the Hudson

    Yonkers Museum

    Barrow Mansion in Jersey City

Kean College (they have several spaces)

    Grounds for Sculpture

Pretty sure denial of service is illegal in NY. I'm sorry you experienced that. I was going to recommend Senate Garage, but wasn't aware of their pricing. Roundhouse in Beacon sounds like it would be good but also very pricey. How about. Opus 40 in Woodstock? I've never attended a wedding there but seems so cool. Although traditional, I've heard Red Maple Vineyard in Esopus is beautiful.

ETA also Club Helsinki in Hudson. Unsure of pricing but I know they are gay friendly

Have you looked at Basilica Hudson in Hudson, NY? My cousin got married there. I have no idea what the pricing is like though, but the structure is gorgeous and seems like just the look you're going for.

Chris I am incensed on your behalf!!! But at least you won't be spending money with someone so close-minded. The Roundhouse is gorgeous but I believe it's about $220/person and there is a minimum food and beverage charge (I believe $30K but I could be wrong).

What about Locust Grove? It's $4500 for the site only (ceremony and reception) for Fridays and Sundays, $6000 for Saturdays. That includes all the tables and chairs and they have an indoor space in case of inclement weather. The spot for the reception is in the building that houses their galleries, which would give you the arts feels you're looking for. You would need to secure a caterer, though, but their on-site kitchen is fantastic. Their contact person, Ken Snodgrass, is a sweetheart and I'm sure you would enjoy working with him.

The Foundry in Long Island City is a cool loft-vibe space. It's not the Hudson Valley but I think it meets your other criteria pretty well

The average cost at the Foundry, just for the reception, is **** for 100 guests.

I am not from the area but if you want different what about a playhouse or other live theater venue? That would fit the bill of different and a little edgy.

LOL@engineer. Some of these raw spaces cost so much to begin with that everything else gets out of control....

OH OH OH! I thought of two other places!

632 on Hudson in NYC (it's amazing. Not cheap, but we haven't established your budget yet.....)

And the Carousel at Bear Mountain! It's so, so cool! And not a fortune, in comparison!

Not sure what kind of different you're looking for but FH and I are getting married at a summer camp in hopewell junction. We found there were a lot to choose from in that general area. Best of luck in your search!

I'm sorry that it's 2017 and people just can't grasp this concept. Love is love!! I work for Marriott and we do a ton of lgbtq weddings but it sounds like you want something less traditional. Is there a favorite restaurant of yours that you could rent out?
