Garter Toss ? yay or nay?.. Need reception ideas.

Simplicity, on July 31, 2018 at 9:26 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 16

So our families are kinda conservatives Christians and I'm nervous for this part. Does bride have anxiety about their FH going under their dress in-front of families and friends?? I am debating If i should even purchase a garter if I am not going to use it. Also I feel kinda uncomfortable w/ that garter catcher has to place it on the bouquet catcher's legs ( unless they happen to be a couple which is rear). Due to religious family and me being uncomfortable i'm thinking about eliminating this whole part of our reception. I don't want people being bored so I am thinking of other creative reception activities and games. Please share any fun ideas or resources I may find help.

I cut all traditional things from my wedding reception simply because I wanted everyone to enjoy the reception instead of have to play games. Have your guests dance and mingle. Set up a video camera and have them say something to you guys, do a photo booth. Its a party!!

We are not doing a bouquet or garter toss, as we feel that it’s lost his steam and has become distasteful and there won’t be many single people at our wedding either. No photo booth or anything cuz I want people on the dance floor cutting loose and having fun and for those who don’t dance and I know who they are at my wedding, it doesn’t matter what you do, they won’t do anything anyways.

IMO the garter/bouqet toss has become an outdated tradition. No single woman really thinks "I need to catch the bouqet so I can get married next!" And the garter toss has its own messed up history. So I plan on nixing both of those things from my own wedding. But if it's something that you want included, and feel comfortable doing in front of people, then go for it. Your conservative family probably won't even bat an eye, because it's a common tradition that I'm sure they've seen before.

We cut most of the traditional things from our wedding. No garter or bouquet toss, no toasts, and the only dance we're doing is the husband and wife first dance.

We are not doing anything but two toasts and a first dance. I am neither conservative nor religious but the garter toss still creeps me out! We are just focusing on a dance party because it's what both we and most of our guests will enjoy. However, we were just at a wedding where the DJ coordinated a round of musical chairs. Maybe that or something similar could be a good fit for your crowd? It's not something I would have chosen to do but it was actually kind of fun!

Toss those traditions. The garter toss & bouquet toss seem outdated anyway. Will you have a DJ/musicians? That’s plenty of entertainment.

Perhaps a photo booth (or you can get a backdrop for selfies and your own props if booth rental is too much)?

I’ve never heard of the garter getting put on the girl that caught the bouquet’s leg. Normally I thought they would just dance together. Whether you do it or not is honestly up to you. I think it can be done tastefully and have fun with it but it’s whatever you’re comfortable with. My fiancé is in the fence about it but I really want to do it. He doesn’t like how DJs tend to make it raunchy. I think if you talk to your DJ you can avoid that. You could also put it lower in your leg. A game option that I like is where the couple sits back to back and take off their shows. They each hold one of their shoes and one of the other persons shoes. Then the DJ asks questions and they rais the show of the person that beat fists the description. For example “who cooks the best?” They would lift the shoe of the person they thought cooked the best. Maybe your fiancé could get down on his knee and help you take of your shoes in place of the garter for this game?

We aren't doing the garter toss. It's in my opinion an outdated tradition and the history behind it is extremely sexiest. We aren't conservative Christians and the garter toss still creeps us out. I think that even conservative Christians will be familiar with the garter toss and have probably seen it before. I think that religion aside most people get somewhat creeped out by the garter toss. If you don't do it no one will miss it at all and will probably be relieved you decided not to have it. Generally bride's that are doing a garter toss have a toss garter or as some call it a throw away garter. The toss garter gets thrown while the bride keeps the other garter. It may be different depending on were you are at but generally it's the same. I've never heard of the garter getting put on the leg of the woman that caught the bouquet so I find that interesting and kind of creepy. Maybe it is a regional thing. Even though we aren't doing the garter toss I will be wearing a garter as I love the one I picked out and I've always wanted to wear one. If you want you can make it something special for your husbands viewing only and it can even have your new initials if you are taking his name. You can have it coordinate with the lingerie you wear under the dress if you want or it can be in an entirely different color or you don't have to wear one at. Instead of the garter toss you could do the anniversary dance but there's no need to do anything in it's place unless you absolutely want to. In the end do whatever you are comfortable with and don't do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable.

If we do the garter toss, FH is not going up my dress with his face and the garter will not be placed on some poor girl's leg. I've never seen that at any wedding I've been to.

Since you're uncomfortable and you don't think it'll be received well, it's, of course, perfectly fine to cut it out. You don't need to replace it with anything though.

I think the garter toss is outdated and most couples don't do it these days. The bouquet toss is more 50/50. Personally, we are skipping both

I think it's definitely fine to cut this from your reception. A lot of people don't do these "traditional" things anymore and nobody really minds! Especially if you're worried or uncomfortable, save yourself the stress and just omit it. Smiley smile

Garter toss is super outdated and just seems completely weird. I would skip it. Dancing and drinks is all you need for a fun reception.

We cut out both the garter toss and bouquet toss. I don't like either and I always hated being called out to catch the brides bouquet because I was single. We are only doing husband and wife dance and speeches other than that we cut out a lot of "traditional" things.

My suggestion is do what makes you comfortable. It's your day and it's all about you and your husband.

    Happy Planning

Thank you all for your suggestions !! Truly a help! My FI decided that he wants to keep garter toss just for fun and giggles BUT I will be talking to MC to make sure no raunchy business going on. We are having a photo booth so I know our guest will be alright. I FI told me not to worry about family long as we enjoy ourselves so that's what I am going to try to do!

I’m cutting it too. Conservative family and I’m a little modest myself. I did get one, but he will remove it when we are alone. I wanted it for my ‘’something blue’’ to be honest lol.
