Garter toss: I think I would be horrified

Laura, on May 1, 2015 at 11:28 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

I found this on a DJ's site as part of a list of garter/bouquet alternatives. If my reception was just going to be my friends then this would be hilarious and they would die. But with more causal people, family and coworkers? Sooooooo inappropriate!

3) The "Mary Poppins" Trick - In the movie "Mary Poppins," the main character astounds the children in her care by pulling OVERSIZED items out of her satchel. You can do this too, quite easily, using a chair that has a cloth covering it all around (backed up against a well-clothed table) so that the audience won't be able to see your pre-arranged accomplice feeding the Groom hilariously over-sized items thru the Bride's legs, such as a beach ball, toaster, deck umbrella, golf clubs, an old boy friend (or celebrity, if you know one). No audience can contain themselves for such an event...Guaranteed!

Ive seen where the groom pulls some oversized granny panties out. Thats hilarious. When I saw the mary poppins I thought he'd try to go under and she'd fly away. Now that would be awesome

I'm curious to see how the conversation with the old boyfriend would go. "I need you to come to my wedding, and hide under my skirt..." Lol

I went to a wedding last night that had a garter toss. The part where the guy puts the garter on the girl who caught the bouquet was sooooooo awkward and uncomfortable (for me; other people were cheering them on). I looked at my FH and said, "We are definitely NOT doing this at our wedding!!!" Haha

At my friend's wedding in 2010, back when "icing" someone was a thing (presenting a guy with a Smirnoff ice they had to drink) she surprised her husband with a Smirnoff ice up her skirt lol it was pretty funny!

I hate the whole concept, honestly. It just seems so weirdly, inappropriately sexual, especially with co workers and older relatives watching...

    Fortunately, I'm usually long gone...

Ugh! DJs who think they're commedians. I've seen/heard it before. They don't care who they embarass, as long as they get a laugh. Probably the same kind who berates guests, to get them up on the dance floor. UGH!

I keep trying to figure out the logistics of how this works and I just can't. How would all this stuff pass from under a chair? And how does it look like it's coming from under the dress and not just under the chair?

Accomplice would be under the cloth-covered table. The back of the chair would be against the table and perhaps have a chair cover. Groom would be kneeling in front of the bride blocking view of guests. Accomplice would pass items from under the table to the front of the chair. Groom would pretend he was reaching up under bride's (long) dress, but actually be reaching under the chair to retrieve the items.

Never have seen it done -- that's just how I picture it in my head!
