Garter Removal and Toss?

The Bride, on July 6, 2019 at 12:37 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 42
According to Bridebox, the garter toss is a tradition that most couple's participate in without knowing it's history and purpose. Story has it that many decades ago, there was a superstition that owning a piece of the brides wedding dress would bring good luck, so guests would attack the bride to rip off a piece of her dress. That led to brides wearing a garter to be given out as a piece of luck to a special guests.

What are your thoughts? Will you participate in the garter removal and toss at your wedding?

I left it up to my Fiancée and it’s probably one of the only things he asked for haha. So why not, we’re having a little fun

My husband and I didn't do it but from the weddings I've been to it seems like a lot of fun.

I did the same as stated above. My fh thinks it will be fun so I’m going to let him do it. There are very few things he wants as his choices in the ceremony and reception.

We’re not doing it for a few reasons. As a wedding guest I always dodge(d) the bouquet because I feared who’d catch the garter. It always seemed awkward to watch the man catch the garter and then remove it from the random girl who caught the bouquet. What if an older gentleman catches the garter and a young girl catches the bouquet? Just awkward so we decided no. I’ve seen really fun ones though where they blindfold the man and he ends up taking the garter off of the groom but thinks it’s the girl lol.

Is that another tradition? Put the garter on whoever catches the bouquet?

From what I know. Everyone does it different. The blindfolded man was very interesting to watch, he was rubbing the groom’s leg thinking it was the woman who caught the bouquet. His reaction taking it off was priceless!

Nope, the last thing I need is to sit in front of everyone I've ever known while my FH fishes up my dress to remove an article of clothing meant to represent my alleged "purity" as a show of consummation of marriage. We'll be skipping this tradition for sure.

Ugh, the young girl and old man scenerio is extremely uncomfortable!

FH and I are skipping the garter toss. I don't feel comfortable with him going up my dress in front of family and friends!

We won't be doing a garter toss. Also I won't wear a garter, a piece of under clothing that has zero purpose other than for an odd tradition. Does anyone know the purpose of a garter? Seems like an old timey accessory.

Yes! The worst is being pushed up to catch the bouquet. I caught it twice and not willingly lol. We didn't do it at our wedding. Frankly the day goes so fast, I'm glad we didn't mess up the flow of the party by doing this.

I also agreed to everything my husband wanted for the wedding because he has such little wants.

I also find the garter removal to be awkward and my husband thought it has become a little too sexualized so we opted not to do it.

Yes from what I've seen at weddings and in videos.
