Gaming Related Centerpieces

TwoGeeksWed, on October 19, 2015 at 7:48 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

One of the things that FH and I initially bonded over was our love of board games (another was Doctor Who - or David Tennant, to be specific!). We both enjoy playing them, and are regulars at Friday night open gaming at the local game store. We (he) hosts some of his friends twice a month at our house for a game of Pathfinder, we both play in a Formula-D league, and he spends almost each Saturday morning/early afternoon playing other games at the game store. He also proposed to me during a game of Zombicide (my character searched a room and found a fire axe and an engagement ring).

So, gaming is a big part of our lives. It makes sense to both of us that we incorporate that somehow in our wedding reception. I'm struggling with the HOW of doing it.

Our initial thought was to use the actual game boards as center pieces, but then I thought about people accidentally spilling drinks and damaging (or ruining) the boards. Not to mention the complete lack of visual interest to the room that just the boards would provide... It would be just flat boards on the table, no height (except the box, if we left it on the table), and maybe the pieces (but I'd be worried about losing them somehow). So I vetoed that idea, as I don't want to ruin the boards.

Then I had the idea of trying to incorporate an element of the game into centerpiece. But the more I think about it, the more it seems like a LOT of work to come up with possibly 17 different centerpieces (assuming that all of our guests RSVP yes - I know they won't, but I'd rather be prepared and have too many centerpieces/ideas than not enough, a week before the wedding). Not to mention that some of the ideas, while fun, almost seem a bit too kid-like. I don't want our reception to end up looking like a toy store display.

So then I got to thinking, and googling... And I think I have an idea that might work. His Dad and Uncle both do woodworking stuff, as does one of the groomsmen. We may ask them if they would be willing to cut 8"-12" meeples out of wood for us, that we can then paint or stain to use as part of the centerpieces. We could then drill a small hole in the very top of the meeple to hold a wire with a clip of some sort to hold a color image of the different boardgame box cover, with a table number. We can also purchase various types of dice in bulk, and scatter those on the tables and provide small dice bags so that people can take dice home as favors at the end of the night (whatever is left, we can use).

Have I lost my mind, or is this possibly reasonable? I then thought we could possibly have each meeple double as a guest book, and have each table sign their own meeple for us to display... But if we have 17 meeples (unlikely) that are 12" tall, that is a LOT of space. So we might just go with one larger (16"?) meeple, and have people sign that. We can then display it in our home above the fireplace, or on one of the bookcases where we store our games.

I have to admit, I have no clue about Dr. Who. But I looked it up on Pinterest and they have a TON of Dr. Who wedding ideas. Take a look when you get a chance, maybe you can find some ideas.

I LOVE the meeple guest book idea!! My FH and I are big gamers too - board and video. I was thinking at the start of the post that using pictures of board games would make great table numbers, as long as you actually put numbers on there (guests may get confused otherwise). But then you added the meeple holder idea and i fell in love. lol! Some games you could showcase could include Forbidden Island/Desert, Coup, Betrayal at house on the hill, Pandemic, Settlers of Catan, and Munchkin! (That last one is one of my favorites)

Yay! I'm glad that people like our ideas. I was worried that they might be a bit over the top... We were thinking of having a variety of games for the table names/numbers, and also having them available in a "gaming corner" for those that aren't interested in dancing at the reception. Smiley smile

The games we are considering are: Monopoly (parents table), Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Robo Rally, Firefly, Life (possibly on the card/gift table), Takenoko, Alien Frontiers, Castles of Mad King Ludwig, Suburbia, Powergrid, Zombicide (sweetheart table, or cake table), Carcassone, Splendor, Cleopatra, Five Tribes, and Formula D.

    I love that you'll have a meeple!

How about making your table numbers as Settlers of Catan tiles? And centerpieces representing wheat, bricks, etc? I found this example: http://imgur.com/a/mV578

I got engaged during a boardgame too! You can read my fiance's post on Boardgame Geek https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1366453/viticulture-engagement). The game designer loved our story so much that he's actually adding our card into future prints of the game!

We're keeping with the viticulture theme by getting married at a winery and we'll also have a boardgame corner with some of our favorite games. I've had to limit our boardgame themed elements because it didn't go well with some of our other ideas. In the process though I came across this site with some good ideas: http://m.imgur.com/a/MXEes

Best of luck! I can't wait to see what you come up with!

I love the meeple idea, especially making them the guest book! We went to the wedding of some fellow gamers recently and they had a poster for a different video/table top game at each table (that doubled as the table name) and asked the guests to sign the posters as the guest book they could hangin their game room. Their center pieces were these plastic shapes with an led inside. They ended up becoming a game once we realized that the remotes on the tables controlled any light with a straight line of sight. Just an idea, but with a couple of tables of gamers, it led to a lot of fun. I included a pic of the wall we built to protect our centerpiece.

I think those are FANTASTIC ideas and I just did a google and I think this picture is another option as well (and if you already have figurines - may be cheaper!)

I also think we should be friends because all those things you listed? My FH and I love them a whole lot as well.
