Games versus Dancing

PermaGrin, on January 11, 2022 at 2:33 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11

Hi all,

I am starting to really embrace the last minute changes we are making to move things outside and try and mitigate COVID related issues. We will not be having a dance floor - but was planning on having games - jenga/ connect 4/ cards etc..

we will let the reduced 50 person guest list know we will be having games in lieu of dancing.

Any great ideas for games that may be fun? I am having a hard time with conceding the band for our plan B!

Cornhole, ladderball, spikeball are all pretty popular where I live. Also, depending on your venue, people love a bonfire. Depends on how casual you want your wedding to feel too.

Totally agree with bonfire! Get some S'mores stuff.

Obviously depends on the vibe you want but some of our favs are:

Ladder golf, corn hole, giant "beer pong", viking chess (Kubb), Kan Jam, horseshoes, bocce ball, ping pong (depending on the weather, sucks when it is windy)

We have a similar situation (50 ppl, no dance floor). We are considering giant Jenga, cornhole, giant connect 4, Cads About Matrimony (for tables), trivia, and/or a photo I-spy (with prize winners for best photo categories). We haven’t made final decisions yet, but leaning towards at least having 3-4 options.

Oh I forgot about spikeball! Definitely wasn't looking for super casual - but looks like that will be how it works out! At least we will; still have a celebration with family!

    Hi Christy,

Yes I was thinking the giant games for the backyard and smaller activities for the tables. If you don't mind me asking - how have people been when you say there is no dance floor? I am just switching to this outdoor setting from a big venue and I have been surprised some are reacting like no dance floor will kill any good time - but our parents and closest are saying it will be fun and a safe way for us to all celebrate . Some people made it sound like it would be a wasted Saturday night to have a catered meal without the dance floor (that made cutting the list easier - but made me a little insecure)

We’ve only had one person respond “negatively” (not that negative, but expressed disappointment). But the last wedding we attended (in early December) had about 100 ppl & a dance floor & the only dancers were the wedding party! It made me feel much better about not having dancing. Our “negative” guest was also there and did not dance haha. Honestly, ppl seemed to be having a good time even without games. There were some who left early, but I think they would’ve anyway.

We have attended many weddings where there is no dancing and guests have a blast because they have a chance to catch up and mingle with guests they may not have seen in awhile. Seems appropriate with Covid where people largely are apart from others. Games are fun but they aren’t seen as wedding activities in our circles.

However you could have card games. Be aware that they do isolate the group from the rest, especially with a very limited time frame as most weddings are.
I have seen online group games played at company parties that are a hit but not sure how well that would translate to a wedding.

Thanks for the reassurance that no dancing isn't an automatic end of fun! I may look into a few group games that could be played .... I guess I need to get creative!

I'm opting for games instead of dancing too! FH is big on games and we play often so it just felt more "us." We have a cornhole set but for tables we are doing: Uno, playing cards, Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza (this is a silly little card party game if you haven't tried it), Taco vs Burrito, Sushi Go, What Do You Meme?, and Jenga. We bought multiples of each and tried to stick to higher multiplayer games. In our social circle we're known to throw board game nights so we had a positive response, it's your day so celebrate how you want!

Love this Ashley! I just got the family edition of what do you meme and I love it! I thought cards against maturity might be fun too since it has the theme of cards against humanity ONLY WAY SCALED down as to not offend. Happy to hear others have done the same!
