Future in law gifts

Natalie, on April 12, 2020 at 6:46 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8

Hello!

My fiancé’s parents are divorced and both his mom and dad remarried within the last five years. I am wondering if we should get his “step parents” gifts. Neither his step mom or step dad had any part in raising him nor are either of his parents contributing to our wedding.

It depends on his relationship with them. Are they his step parents or are they his parents new spouses?

I agree. My husband's parents have been separated for 10+ years, but they consider themselves already divorced and his father is engaged. My husband and I barely know the woman he is engaged to. We only met her like 2-3 times prior to our wedding. We didn't buy her a gift.

Maybe just a card ? It’s thoughtful, inexpensive and they’ll appreciate the thought.

If they didn’t raise him and he doesn’t have much of a relationship with them, then I don’t think it’s necessary.

If parents help with the wedding, financially, they are due a nice written letter of thanks. But you don't thank people for a gift with a gift. No other gifts are due any parents at wedding time. After, it is usual to give them an album of wedding pictures, or framed ones. Gifts on Birthdays, their anniversary, Mother's Day or Father's day, or other holidays like Christmas, are appropriate. But your wedding is not a traditional gift giving occasion for parents.

You could get them couples gifts — like something for the house, yard etc
