Full pies or mini pies?

Jill, on January 19, 2015 at 6:34 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

We are getting married on Pi Day, so naturally we are having pie! Our reception is going to be held outdoors at a park. We are having pizza followed by a pie desert. I was thinking that mini pies/tarts would be easier and allow people to pick their own filling. But I'm worried they won't hold up making them a couple days before. Especially since we won't have a way to keep them warm (keeping them cool won't be an issue). Does anyone have experience with these? Or would full pies be the smarter choice? My guest list is less than 50 people, so I'm not too worried about having to tote around dozens of full sized pies.

Thank you!

Have you thought about doing hand pies-single person pies but don't require tins? You could have them wrapped in parchment bags. Super cute. There is always pie on a stick too (but their ratio filling to crust seems like a bit much). Smiley smile

I am by no means a baker, so I'm a little confused as to what a hand pie is, Northern MN. My mom is helping me with the pies, so we won't have my lack of cooking abilities making things a disaster. Smiley winking

Thanks for your input Wendy C! Not being someone who bakes it all sounds complicated to me.

For a friend's wedding, my sister made about 300 mini pies in muffin tins--apple, peach, and cherry. She displayed them on a cupcake stand and they were a huge hit. I believe she started making them on Thursday for a Saturday wedding, and we were eating leftovers for a few days afterwards as well. They were delicious.

Jenn: that sounds really cute! I think I am going to do a test run with a recipe and make my friends be a guinea pig. Smiley winking I will also look into options for easy large pies. Thanks for all the advice! Smiley smile

A Pi Day pie themed wedding? Amazing.

I'd prefer mini pies, but that's because I love crust.

Cute idea! In terms of baking, regular pies will be MUCH MUCH easier than mini pies. It won't make a big difference in terms of temperature and unless you're freezing them or it's freezing outside, they should be room temp, which is fine for pies. Hand pies will also be a lot more work than regular size pies. If you do regular pies, you can make the crusts and freeze them in all of the pie plates for months, assuming you have a big enough freezer. Then you can make the fillings one or two nights before, refrigerate those. The morning of the wedding or the night before, scoop fillings into the shells and bake them off. Fruit fillings are super easy, fast, and economical to make, so you can make a few flavors (blueberry, apple, pumpkin, cherry).

I love pi day!! I'm so jealous. I'm having my hower on pie day and having a pie themed menu. I'd suggest hand pies or regular size. I'm not a huge fan of the crust to filling ratio of mini pies.
