Friendor advice

Sarah, on February 1, 2020 at 10:32 AM Posted in Planning 0 4
Hi all! Is anyone hiring any friends as vendors? My stepdaughter's grandmother has insisted on making all my desserts (which I am 100% okay with!) But I don't want to take advantage of her kindness, and I don't want to be too OCD with her.

Does anyone have any advice for dealing with friendors?

I’m using a friend as our photographer! She’s great and has done weddings in the past. If they want to and you enjoy their skills then go for it

Depending on how big your wedding is, that is a lot of work for someone. Since she's a grandmother, does she have the energy/health to do this task (I know grandma's can be a variety of ages, but my mind always goes to like 75+ lol).

Also, people do talk about horror stories on here about hiring friendors who aren't professionally doing that job day to day and are just winging it because "how hard can it be."
My brother's wife insisted on doing the flowers/decor for our wedding as their wedding gift to us. She is professional event planner and florist, and she literally would not take no for an answer. I felt terrible about how hard she was working the morning leading up to the wedding. Everything was gorgeous, but I wanted her to be able to enjoy it as a guest and be one running around like crazy up until the ceremony.

We did not use any friends or family as vendors for our wedding. I didn’t want to risk something going wrong and ruining our friendships/relationships.

I offered to draw up a contract for my friendors, but, in the end we didn't.

Our videographer did this to learn how to do weddings, as well as experiment with some new equipment. She charged us $1000 (way below market rate), and we venmo'd her the payment. Since I work with her, and also follow her other filmography work, I knew she'd come through.

My HMU is not only my friend, she also is my and DH's hair stylist. She's done several cuts on DH, and one on me, so we already knew her work, and simply worked off our relationship that way. Venmo with her, as well.

It all depends on your relationship with your friendor and their reliability.

Given that this is a grandma, maybe ask for a time to sit down, chat, and find a good working relationship?
