Fresh hops or dried hops for boutonnières?

Timothy, on July 29, 2016 at 6:14 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6

My friend grows hops and we'd like to incorporate them into the wedding flowers. We don't know if we should try to use them fresh or dry them out? If we use them fresh, how do we store them before we give them to our florist? I am having trouble finding info on this!

What a great idea! I would think that fresh would be easier to work with. Maybe contact your florist and ask their advice/ preference?

I don't know but we're planning on using them too. I like the look of the fresh ones personally. If you can get both, do a test run of how you'd like them to look or next to the other flowers and filler you plan on having for the bouts and see what you like better.

I'm drying mine because fresh ones grow mold quickly, and I want to harvest the week before. Ask the florist though, for sure. I'm meeting my florist Monday and she has used hops before (and is using it for me) so I can let you know what she says.

We're using fresh bines that I'm cutting and keeping the ends in water the day before, to tie back the drape on our arch. Bines will stay green for 2-3 days if you put the ends in water.

We are doing hops too, but I'm buying mine online. The ones I'm ordering are dried, but don't look horrible. I've looked into all this as well and there isn't a whole lot of information, so I figured it wasn't a popular thing to do. I'm glad to see there are others! Smiley smile

I'm just trying to time this thing out. If I'm drying I'll need to pick them soon, so I have time to dry them. If I'm using them fresh, I need to wait and try and pick them a few days before. We are getting married next saturday

@klimberkat, can you let us know what your florist says on Monday?
