Free Upgrades on Honeymoon

Nicki, on July 2, 2019 at 2:29 PM Posted in Honeymoon 1 17
I’ve heard a lot about getting free upgrades on honeymoons. We’ve already emailed some of our hotels and they’re giving us a better room.

How do we tell people (thinking airline personal) that we are on our honeymoon without sounding like jerks? Is it okay to straight up ask for perks or should we be subtle about it? We are not one to wear “just married” gear as suggested by some travel sites I’ve seen.

thanks!

I think it's OK to be straightforward and ask something like, "Are there upgrades available for honeymooners," with a smile. But be gracious and polite whether the answer is yes or no. Remember how many people they deal with in a day and how many honeymooners they encounter. It's a special trip for you, but just another work day for them.

The airline won’t upgrade you to first class or anything if that’s what you’re hoping... apparently that’s actually a security violation because they have to screen you in advance to be in first class/closer to the pilot. Since our plane wasn’t full though, the flight attendant did let us move up to the exit row which had more leg room at least. They also gave us free champagne. But I wouldn’t expect much more than that!

We are wearing "hubby" "wifey" shirts on the plane, and I put a note in our hotel & restaurant reservations we are on our honeymoon. Other than that, we probably won't say anything but the shirts kind of speak for themselves.

@Gen, did you straight up just say you’re on your honeymoon? A less crowded row or possibility more leg room seat would all I would look for if anything.

Gracious to all service industries, especially airlines because flying is terrifying hehe. Just looking for a way to a way to make it sound polite, not obnoxious other than the obvious ways of being a kind person. 😊

I'm glad I stumbled upon this thread. I don't expect to be bumped to first class for our flights but leaving notes in our reservations and whatnot is a great idea. I'm undecided if I want to wear shirts or publicly show that we're on our honeymoon.

We went to Disney for our minimoon. We had just married buttons and on our first day we had matching Mr and Mrs shirts. We also weren’t afraid to tell people why we were there. but in Disney they always ask if you’re celebrating anything, we didn’t go around just telling people. We also didn’t say anything at the airport.
We got a bottle of Champaign and chocolate covered strawberries delivered to our room, a glass of Champaign and free dessert at dinner, and at lunch they announced us as newly weds to the entire restaurant, lol.

I wore a "bride" shirt on our flight, and we were given a bottle of champagne by American Airlines. That was a nice gesture! We didn't get anything for our RC cruise, which we were actually kinda irritated by since people having birthdays and anniversaries during the cruise got door signs and free booze/special snacks delivered to them each day (we made friends with some people that experienced these perks during the cruise) and we got nothing.

My best friend was married on a cruise in November of 2017. We had a blast but the cruise line didn't do anything besides give them a bottle of champagne. All their decorations and what not Myself and my best friends family did. We had our best friend get them out of room and then her family and I went in and decorated with just married and things like that. At dinner some people got desserts for their birthday (they gave me one because my birthday was in like 3 days) but they didn't actually decorate anything for anyone so I'm curious if that was the families doing signs or if you had a super cool cruise ship.

It was all provided by the cruise ship! They were all identical decorations and were put on there before people even got to their rooms (we were some of the first people on the ship).

We went to Maui for our honeymoon and when I made our hotel reservation I made a note that we were there for our honeymoon. They had a bottle of champagne, chocolates and a card waiting for us in our room.

Wow thats awesome, yeah our cruiseline didn't do that and she got married on the cruise thats awesome. Sorry you didn't get any of the perks though. We are doing a minimoon traveling from Tn (where we are getting married) to FL (where we live). We are leaving Wednesday after our wedding and will be staying in Savannah GA wednesday night and Thursday night and then in St. Augustine FL Friday night and then back home to Sarasota on Saturday. My FH is super pushy sometimes (can be embarrassing at times definitely has the salesman attitude) so I know for a fact he has told all of our hotels its our honeymoon and has made a big deal about it. Now to see if any of them do anything haha.

We wore Mr and Mrs shirts but I don’t think they noticed anyway... we got to move up because we noticed there were plenty of empty seats anyway and my husband was like “hey we’re on our honeymoon, is it ok if we move to a better seat?” And the flight attendant said it was fine to sit anywhere as long as it was in economy, and recommended the exit row because more legroom. Honestly though they probably would’ve let us do that anyway even if we weren’t on our honeymoon... other people were moving around too because there were lots of open seats. The free champagne though, definitely was because he said that.

Seriously you just have to be shameless about it and say “we’re on our honeymoon” to anyone who will listen :p my husband did that every time we ordered or did something... we got a lot of just “congratulations!” but several upgrades/free things. Hotel room was bumped to the top floor. Several free drinks. We were allowed into a private members-only club at the resort, with a rooftop infinity pool!

Its a little awkward but you just have to tell EVERYONE :p

That's so awesome! It feels like a really awkward thing to say, but I'm also not recently married lol. I'm sure after the wedding we will feel so excited that we will want to tell everyone regardless of the free stuff! It's cute that your husband spoke up so much Smiley smile

In regular conversation you could just mention "Yea this is our honeymoon" or "Yea were here for our honeymoon" "Were honeymooners" etc.

    Crazy but subtle works.

I'll be honest with you...as an airline employee...the upgrade thing doesn't work unless y'all have some status with the airline (million mile fliers). This is simply based on ticket class purchased and if the upgrade is available they will give it to the highest frequent fliers first. We both work for airlines and are planning on purchasing first class seats to our honeymoon.

Major hotels in honeymoon destinations might have slight upgrades available but if you truly want a first class experience you are probably just going to have to pay for it. Not to be brutally honest but I see this every day and it's just not realistic anymore. Good luck!

That is false. The upgrade isn't possible due to ticketing factors and a long list of frequent fliers on the upgrade list who spend tens of thousands a year on the airline, then comes employees traveling on company business. Once those passengers have been accommodated the chance will become available to purchase an upgrade at the gate. I'm not sure who told you it was a security issue, but it's not a thing even though it's a nice thought.

As someone who flies a lot, has flight attendant friends and a couple air Marshell's too- the Security thing is false.
It has to do with frequent flyer miles, seat upgrades available, past seat purchases too. They go to ones who are the Platinum status and work their way down.

The ONLY way this is true is if you are asking to meet the pilot- they usually only allow little kids to do that tho.

Wear a a shirt or button, talk about how epic your wedding was, tell hubby "I can't believe that we are MARRIED!"

    Good luck on those upgrades!
