Free photo session

Gina, on August 28, 2019 at 2:31 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 4
We won a "free" engagement session via social media, and have the session this weekend. I've asked for any fees associated with using the photos once ready, but he said it's free. Should we tip him at the session? Or wait until we get the photos at least?

I would wait and also read everything thoroughly before signing. I have heard some of these free sessions take all the pictures you want and use them for promotions giving you one printed copy of one pose. The rest cost a LOT more.

I would definitely find out if you’re getting any copies of these photos, rights to the photos etc. The shoot might be free, but I bet there’s a catch to get the prints. Good luck though, I hope there’s not and you get beautiful engagement photos!

Exactly this. The shoot, no doubt is free. But to get things you want out of it and/or not have your photos used for their promotional materials, you may have to pay a fee of some sort. So definitely find that out first.

That being said, regardless of what you do end up having to pay, if you feel you had a good experience, absolutely tip them an amount you feel comfortable with. If you feel good and had a great shoot, you can definitely do that same day, but sending a thank you card with a tip after the fact is nice too.

Hey Gina! Have you contacted this company to ask for a copy of the contract you will be signing when working with them? That way you will know exactly what you are getting from this shoot and (hopefully) you won’t get any surprises!!

Where are you having your shoot?
