Free Makeup Trial Tip?

OnTheWayToMrsA, on June 7, 2017 at 8:21 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19

Good morning! I won a free Mary Kay makeup trial through David's Bridal. I'm going tonight, but I don't know how much to tip because I won't know what the charge would be (i.e., 20% of what?). Any idea how much I should tip? Or if I'm even supposed to tip?

I never know how much to tip. My trial is half of the overall cost. $75 now and $75 the day of. Do I tip now and then? Only now or only then? And how much?

If my trial was free I would probably drop $20 and call it a day.

I'll give you a free tip- run away- and go hire a real MUA.

Alternatively call and ask how much a makeup trial is, then tip based off of that

Mary Kay is a multilevel marketing company like Tupperware. ANYONE can get a "free" trial for them to try and sell you their products.

MK salespeople don't apply makeup--they sell it to you.

I wouldn't leave a tip for a Mary Kay make up trial. Unless it's a real MUA using their products otherwise it's just an everyday girl using their products and is not a professional. I would not leave a non professional a tip. Invest money into your hair and make up. You already planned to have it done. Plan to spend the money so it looks good.

Don't do it. I fell for the "free facial" thing. It was boring and the products are waaayyy over priced in my opinion.

Don't go. Save your time, find a real MUA. This is the way they market, and 99% of them are not trained.

Omg, I had no idea, now I'm scared hahaha. I literally never wear makeup, I was just excited to see what I'd look like with some on, but it'll be in about 7 hours and we confirmed last night so I'd feel kinda bad cancelling so last minute... but ugh, I don't even want to go now!

Id cancel. They will try to trick you into buying products you dont even need. Like Celia said, most are not trained or even up to date with makeup trends.

Yeah I went to one of these, and they just pressure you to buy stuff after they give you a tiny amount of makeup products to try (which you apply on your own in many cases BTW).

I used to 'sell' Mary Kay. You're going to be the one doing the makeup, not them. They are going to tell you what products you NEED & talk you through how to put them on. In the past, & I'm not sure this is still correct, they were not allowed to touch you. They do not have a license or any type or certification. I have met 1 MK lady who was working towards being a professional MUA, she didn't try to sell product when she was doing makeup & she primarily worked for tips. For your trial I guess you could base it off of the consultant. You'll be able to tell if she is trying to sell you, or if she actually does your makeup for you.

Yikes! Okay, I'll definitely be cancelling then.. I don't have the time or patience for all that right now.

In that regard then, any suggestions on what to look for when searching for a *professional* MUA? I definitely need to get started with these trials, but I'm clueless with makeup and have no idea what to ask or look for (obviously, lol). ETA: Thanks for all the feedback! Smiley smile

You can use the vendor tab here- or google Make up Artist "my city"

(instagram is a good way to go also- same way #ohioMUA or #daytonMUA) fill in the blank with your own city/state etc etc)

Check the vendors tab here. Look at pictures of their work, and schedule a trial with one of them you like. At this point, you probably can't be picky though. My wedding is a few weeks before you and I had a tough time finding someone who was available on my date back in February. Start looking asap!

I met my MUA at a make up counter. I got a free trial as I was buying make up I needed anyways, (he helped me try on shades) then I grabbed his card and booked him to come to the house the morning of my wedding. Tip: go when the store is not busy so you can have their attention and really get a feel for them and their work.

It's cancelled, thanks everyone! I had a *lot* of work done at the dentist yesterday and I'm incredibly sore, but was gonna go anyway, so if I showed up and it turned out to be a sales pitch and I apply my own makeup I'd be PISSED. I'd rather not take the chance (for her sake or mine), so thanks again.

I'll get on the vendor tab ASAP for hair and makeup trials. It's my fault for being so late, I keep forgetting I need to do it, so fingers crossed that someone is still available.

This is a scam. I went to the very same thing. This is not what you think it is. They will only do half of your face, and nudge you to buy all of their products. It is not worth your time. You did not win anything.
