Franken-dress? Like the top of one and the bottom of another

Tiffany, on October 23, 2017 at 9:53 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

I found a dress I fell in love with, I love the top and the detailing, but the dress is A-line. I actually would prefer the dress with a ball gown bottom and tiered layers. My wedding IS on grass by the beach, but not on the sand, so I'm hoping the ball gown isn't too heavy.

Question: what should I do? If I got another skirt to wear over the existing dress, it is like paying for 1.5 dresses; I'd probably have to do alterations on the actual dress AND the skirt. Is there an inexpensive way for me to get the dress that I want? How hard would it be for a seamstress to sew in ball gown layers?

I wouldn't be unhappy without the ball gown but would definitely be happier with it. I also had a dream that I found the top of the dress with the bottom ha

Attached: the dress I love with the a-line. How it looks with the ball gown bottom. And then the watters ball gown I have my eye on right now.

Couldn't get all images to attach together so they're posted below as comments

I can see why you're struggling with this! It looks great with the ballgown bottom half. I guess for me it would just depend on cost, my ability to adapt my vision, and what a seamstress thinks she can do. Personally, I would just keep looking. What if you do this and doesn't quite turn out how you want? It's not going to be cheap just for the alterations alone. Not to mention you would have to pay for both pieces.

I completely understand now that I see it. I love the bottom. However, the second dress' top is beautiful too. I would base it off costs, and if it were me, if price was too high I would definitely go with the one that has the bottom.

Would you be able to get the dress with the bottom that you love and then work on making the top closer to what you like with the A line dress's top? That might be more cost effective, but I'm not sure.

Question--is the A-line dress also watters? if so, have the bridal shop contact them to see if they will do a custom order. Many designers will do this for a fee--and possibly a longer delivery timeframe. if they are different designers, youll have to buy both dresses and combine them via a local seamstress.

When I was dress shopping I was looking at doing a similar thing with two Casablanca dresses. I think the fee was about $150 or $200 for the switch. I didn't end up getting that dress combo but it was pretty.

The dress is also watters! I had actually decided to keep looking for another dress, but every dress I tried on I compared to this one. And finally the consultant at the most recent place was like ok.. everything you're saying you want is on that dress. Face it. You found your dress.

I was driving myself crazy not being able to find my dress and having everyone tell me I need to order now based on my wedding date. So this is my dress! Just have to figure out what to do about the bottom.

So..there is a Tara keely dress that is close what you are looking for. I actually ended up with the Watters Marnie gown because I loved the Tara top (marnie is similar to yours I think) but imagined just more tulle and a line than a full ball gown with horse hair (similar to the skirt you like!). Just an FYI Watters does sell separates too so maybe that's an option. Here's the Tara keely dress I tried on. May need to google to get a better image and it comes in colors other than champagne.

ETA - I was trying on separates and my awesome sales associate was like uh you're basically recreating the marnie, why don't we try that back on. So I feel your pain with thinking you like different parts etc!

One of my favorite instagram celebs Katy Hearn had a dress made this way, but I know she actually bought both dresses and then had them combined. The end result was stunning. The full photo shoot is here:

ETA: The bottom of her dress was also Watters!
