Fountains For Food

Cydne, on November 27, 2020 at 3:07 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 17
I am set to marry in 2022! FH and I want a super small, intimate backyard wedding ceremony. Because we both have tons of family and friends, the reception will be two days later with SIX TIMES the number of guests. In efforts to save money and stress, our party will be between 2p-8p with limited food and bar choices. I want 3 fondue fountains with tons of finger foods and mini entrees to put on a skewer and enjoy. I’ll have an attendant to keep the area clean and help people. Chocolate and cheese are my two must haves but I’m stuck trying to come up with another savory fondue. Please help! I want as many people to enjoy the unique dining option as possible so I wanna pick something many people will love. BBQ sauce perhaps? Any suggestions or concerns would be greatly appreciated! I tend to think big without considering details.

Will you have other options for those that don't want to eat appetizers covered in recycled germy chocolate and cheese? Fondue at an event with "tons" of strangers sounds like a total nightmare, honestly. Especially coming out of a pandemic.

I mean everything will be open to eat without dipping it into anything but I understand the concern. Like I said, I’ll keep an attendant near to ensure no one drops any food or puts anything other than foods secured on a stick into the fountains.

I recommend having things individually wrapped/packaged.

I generally don't mind buffets but in the current climate, I would not feel comfortable serving or eating food in this set up. Even in the best of situations, fountain sauces are not sanitary..but they're ok for private dining at home where liability due to food safety laws is not on the table.

I thing bbq sounds like a good idea! Especially if you'll have meats as appetizers

Unless the pandemic is truly over by then and all of your guests have received Covid vaccines, having fondue as the primary food at a large wedding reception sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. I'd recommend having a safer backup food option in place

I somewhat agree with the above, but I also don’t do buffets. I think the fountains are a fun idea and would be fine as long as they’re covered and the food stays covered.

If fondue is going to be the main food item, and you're not providing an actual meal, you're going to have a lot of hungry guests crowding around 3 fondue fountains. Even without covid, this is not an ideal situation.

It’s a short and sweet, early afternoon event. I wanted people to have time to get food afterwards.

In that case, just serve cake, coffee/lemonade and sandwich platters from Costco.

Because your reception is from 2-8, meaning it spans a meal time, you’ll need to serve something more substantial that would amount to a full meal. This sounds like more of an idea for appetizers or cocktail hour.

I wouldn't consider a 6-hour reception (2-8 pm) to be "short and sweet." That is incredibly long! Do you envision guests staying for the whole time were you thinking along the lines of an open house/drop in reception?

For a reception lasting from 2-8, I think the fondue stations would be great for appetizers, but considering it runs through dinner time, your guests will expect a meal. If I went to a wedding as a guest and realized there was no actual dinner being served, I would leave fairly early.

I don't want to sound rude, but food fountains are a logistical and food safety nightmare. We never did them when I was in wedding catering. Too much chance. Firstly, the food needs to be refreshed every 2-2.5 hours at a MINIMUM. Secondly, even without a pandemic, people can get really sick. All it takes is one person with norovirus, or influenza, or even someone who didn't wash their hands completely after going to the bathroom to potentially get everyone sick, including you and your future spouse. In pandemic times, I think this would be incredibly negligent.

That sounds so fun and super yummy! I love the idea of BBQ for the third option!
