found my flower seed for favors! (after losing much sleep...lol)

Tracey , on April 14, 2013 at 2:42 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

OK.. made a decision based on several factors.... easy to grow, comes back every year, can be planted in late summer, and seemed to be best option for costs. Here it is Smiley smile ... wanted one type of flower.. but after speaking with mom (green thumb).. made a decision. Ordered 5 pounds.. should be enough to generously fill 100 packets.....enough to cover 1/2 of an acre!! haha...found a coupon for $12 off and got free shipping.

1 tablespoon is a lot of seeds depending on the flower. For favors you don't really need that many seeds. I mean, how many people do you know garden? Most of your guests probably won't plant them, will just plant a few in a small pot, or won't end up tending them long term so don't overthink it too much. Have you considered lavender(the plant)? How about asters? Those fit your description as far as color and perennialness goes. http://www.burpee.com/perennials/aster/

There's also single bloom varieties. This site sells by the pound. http://www.edenbrothers.com/store/aster_seeds.html

Thanks Pan... i know.. alot of overthinking for the few that will plant.. but none the less.. want to be sure it fits the theme and goes with our labels... to watch them grow as our love grows... don't want them to die, etc... hahaha

I like the single bloom varieties by the pound.. but not sure how many pounds i'd need to fill 100 envelopes?

Looks like my $100 budget on favors isn't going to work.(have $64 in the packaging). so at this point just trying to find something nice without spending another $200

You could do a wildflower mixture, Menards and WalMart have big bags of these fairly cheap....

Wildflower mix would be great. Even my dollar store has boxes of them.

Hey Tracey. This is a place I've ordered from before and they have some perennial seeds in bulk.

    http://www.mainstreetseedandsupply.com/Bulk_Flower_Seeds_s/127.htm

I think the hollyhock was around $70 per pound and the shasta daisy was around $50 a pound. Coneflower is around $40 a pound. All of these are easy to grow plants and come back for me every year and have tons of blooms. Personally, I think they are a little more interesting than the wildflower mixes. You could even get a 1/2 lb of two varieties and alternate among guests or let them choose which they want.

    Good luck!

I think your best bet is to get the packets first. Then, you can buy some cheap seeds at Home Depot (or wherever) to test how many you need.

Since your wedding is in Summer, you may want to consider seeds that can be planted in late Summer/Fall. Delphinium, foxglove, sweet pea, lavender....what about Forget-Me-Nots? Just the name alone will have people remembering you! Smiley smile

I would personally buy the seeds from menards, walmart, lowes or home depot. I think j&b has a point on when they bloom. You would want to go with something that blooms later in the season so people can plant right away and see the results.

Flower seed insomnia is the worst!!

heehee .. that said, and whatever you decide on buying, I wouldn't get them from a dollar store. They might be cheaper but they were probably packaged for the last years growing season.

A typical wedding favor uses one teaspoon of seeds, and a pound of a seed mixture yields between one hundred fifty and two hundred teaspoons, depending on the size of the seeds.

How about these? Falls in your budget.

You just put the order in, maybe you can cancel it? Doesn't hurt to ask.
