Found my dress! but my mom doesn't like it :(

JuneBride, on January 11, 2016 at 1:38 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

I bought my dress last week and my MOH and bridesmaids loved it, but my mom seemed less than enthusiastic. She kept saying things like "well, it's the marriage that matters'', and "I'm glad you like it". It really hurt my feelings because I was hoping she would love it.

I'm hoping to pair it with a cathedral length lace veil to make up for the shorter train. (I love trains!)

OMG! That is stunning on you! My mom was kinda weird during the dress shopping process too. She liked every single thing equally and was really unhelpful in making a decision. I think this is one decision that you need to make based on your own thoughts and how you feel. Its not something anyone can really help with because it is a feeling, like saying yes to your fiancee is based on your feelings, so is buying a dress. It's personal. Don't take mom's indifference as any reflection is how you look because girl, you rock that dress!

I agree with mrjonesandme! You look gorgeous in that dress! Sorry your mom didn't have the reaction you were looking for but you should feel beautiful on your big day and get the dress you like!

I think its lovely, and you'll be beautiful.

I personally would want to know what she doesn't like, I just kinda like knowing other peoples' thought processes. If there's no good way for her to explain what she doesn't like, then I would take it negitivly. It just might not be what she had envisioned and that can be jarring for some people.

Thanks! I didn't push her as to what she didn't like, it just seemed easier to say something polite in response and move on.

I'm guessing she doesn't like the sleeves and/or thinks it's too plain. Possibly too revealing as well, my mom is pretty old fashioned. Sigh.

I suppose you can't please everyone

Parents tend to have a specific idea of what their daughter will look like in her wedding dress and it could just be that she may have pictured a different type of gown. Your dress is gorgeous, and as long as you're happy that is all that matters.

I've learned through this whole wedding planning process that you absolutely cannot please everyone, so you have to do what makes you and your SO happiest. Best of luck with the rest of your wedding planning! xoxo

Gorgeous! That's going to look amazing with a long veil. Maybe if you think she thought it was too plain you could consider adding a small belt? Did she see it with a veil?

That dress is gorgeous on you! I promise your mother will think you are beautiful on your wedding day not matter what. It probably just isn't her style. When I first picked my dress pattern my mom wasn't sure at all, but she agreed that even though it wasn't her preference it would look good on me. By the time the dress was finished she was in love with it.

That dress is beautiful! My mom loved all the dresses I didn't like and was 'lukewarm' on the dresses I loved, but we have very different taste and I didn't really care Smiley smile Your mom is going to think you look beautiful on your wedding day no matter what, because it will be your wedding day!

It is really hard when your mom doesn't like the dress that you fell in love with. You always want that sort of "approval" from her so I totally understand how you feel. In the end - YOU have to feel beautiful and if that's the dress that makes you feel that way then unfortunately mom has to live with it. Btw - that dress is stunning on you. I'm sure once you get a veil and makeup and hair etc and your mom sees the complete look. She will absolutely love the dress that you choose. If not, know that when you walk down that aisle, your FH is going to look at you as if the most beautiful woman in the world just took his breath away Smiley winking Smiley winking

I really understand feeling let down if your mom isn't as in love with your dress as you are. The other girls are right though. If you love it and it makes you feel beautiful then that's what truly matters. ... and BTW.... you. look. GORGEOUS! It really is a lovely dress on you!!

It's a beautiful dress! And it suits you perfectly. My mom didn't like my dress at first - she wanted me to get another one I had tried on previously. But when she saw pictures of the final fitting, and then on my wedding day, she couldn't get over how beautiful the dress was. Maybe she just needs to see it after alterations, with the veil and all Smiley smile

    Beautiful dress! I love it.

@Miranda makes a great point... I think mothers often picture their daughters in a certain type of wedding dress, and maybe your mom is just having a hard time imagining you in something else. At the end of the day, YOU have to feel beautiful. And if that dress makes you feel beautiful, then it's the one for you.
