Found a way to enjoy my dress twice!

Chrysta, on October 29, 2020 at 1:40 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 33
So I found myself in the position of absolutely loving my dress and wanting to wear it all night long, but it not being convenient to wear barhopping after the reception due to the train. I didn’t want to change out of my dress for the second half of my evening, and forfeit all those pictures of me in it; but I also didn’t want to carry around my train all night or compromise the look of the dress with a bustle (NOT a fan of bustles). So, I came up with an out-of-the-box alternative... I purchased the exact same dress twice! I found a discounted sample of my dress (so I didn’t have to pay full price for it), and I am going to have it shortened into a party dress that I can wear out barhopping! Now, I will technically be able to wear my wedding dress ALL night long without any of the inconvenience!
Has anyone else found an out-of-the-box solution for issues with their weddings?

Oh that's cute! So will you wear the short one for your reception also? Or only barhopping?

Thanks! I have never heard of anyone doing it before, but it seemed like a genius solution to my predicament LOL I’m going to wear my full gown for the ceremony and reception, and the shortened dress just for bar hopping

That's a really cool idea, I love it!! Awesome that you were able to find a discounted version of your dress, too! Are you just removing the train on the second one? Or going to shorten it even more? My fiance and I were also planning on barhopping after our wedding reception, but I haven't even thought about what I'd wear yet.

Thanks! 😀 I got a GREAT deal on it! I am going to shorten it to above the knee. And doing so means I could wear it again! It would make an awesome New Year’s Eve dress! Or maybe I could bust it out for our one year anniversary. I hadn’t really thought about what I would wear out barhopping either. Postponing has really given me time to think about little details I hadn’t thought about before! I looked around for a pretty party dress, but just couldn’t find anything I loved. And the first location we are going to I chose because it has a landmark we wanted to get pictures at, and half the amazingness of the picture was going to be my dress in the location/lighting. So I started realizing I would have to carry my train all the way there, get the pictures we wanted, then leave my guests, carry my train all the way back to the hotel to change, then go back out. Definitely didn’t want to do that! And really didn’t want to forfeit my vision either. So this idea suddenly hit me at 2 AM a few weeks ago!

Thanks! I figured I would rather pay for a second dress that I loved, than pay for a bustle I hated!

The best ideas always seem to come to mind at 2am! 😂 Definitely a cool idea for an anniversary/party dress! And awesome way to get the pictures you want but without the hassle. I also am not a fan of bustles, especially certain types, so I totally understand wanting to avoid that. Sounds like it's worth the money, especially because you'll get to wear it again!

Thanks! Unfortunately, the wedding was postponed until next fall (boo covid), so I won’t be having it altered until closer to the wedding. But I will definitely post pictures then!

I'm not a fan of trains in general (they're an overall pain with logistics of not tripping on it or getting it snagged, other people stepping on it, not having to worry about heel height, etc) so I'm going to have my dress made without one in the first place. Less material so it's cheaper too.

Oh I am the complete opposite – I ADORE trains! That was actually my one and only “must have” on my dress. The problem is, as much as I love trains, I detest bustles LOL It presented quite the conundrum. My train is only chapel length though, so it’s definitely easily manageable during our reception - we are having a small destination wedding, so there will only be about 40 people; no DJ or dancing. Just an open bar, music played over the sound system, a plated meal, and entertainment (caricature artist and tarot card reader), so the train shouldn’t be an issue for the reception. After the reception we plan to go barhopping on Bourbon Street, which would most definitely be an issue for a train! Not only would there be people stepping all over it, I don’t even want to think about what I would be dragging it through on the streets! 😖 yuck!

What?! That’s brilliant but wasn’t it expensive? That’s great you can keep and wear the shortened one again.

Oh wow! That’s an interesting idea 🤔💡 With the postponement, I decided to gift myself a second dress to wear after dinner and for the rest of the night afterward (Vegas wedding). It’s a simpler, fitted style and easy to move in. But, funny enough, yesterday the thought came to mind of either having the small train removed or shortening the dress altogether (not sure what length would look best though). I haven’t fully decided and I’m still thinking about those different ideas.

Actually, I got an amazingly good deal on it! I found a boutique that had a damaged sample dress (the only thing wrong with it is the buttons on the back need replaced). The original cost of the dress is $2500. They were selling the sample for $800. The owner was so cool. I told her my idea of buying a second dress and shortening it into a party dress for barhopping afterwards, and she love the idea! So she agreed to sell the dress to me for $550!! I couldn’t believe it! I literally squealed and jumped up & down LOL

Wow I love this idea!!!! This is a really creative way to wear your dress again and again, I know I feel the same way about mine in that I never want to take it off. I'd wear it to go dog walking or grocery shopping if I could Smiley xd
