Forming the Ceremony

Mariana, on September 13, 2019 at 8:42 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 10
So, our ceremony and reception will be at the same place. Ceremony will start at 4:00 and it'll be by a judge. My family wanted me to get married by church but out of respect for my future husband who isn't the same religion as them, and out of respect for me which I also preferred not to. I've been told judge ceremonies (at least here) are no more than barely 15 minutes, and I really really want to extend that time plus want it personalized. Not just the "sign, kiss, husband and wife" but a unity ceremony like with a positive opening message, the unity part, our personal written vows, and then the sign and kiss (lol). I know it's stupid, I don't know!! I just don't know how to ask her(the judge) that or if they can't/won't do that or if it's against their protocol or idk!! HELP!!!

My FH uncle is doing our ceremony and he is a judge. He told us we can change up the ceremony and have him say whatever we want him to. Not sure if it varies by state but I'm sure you can just ask her if you're allowed to add in some things. I'm sure a reading being added is common

Most of the ceremonies I perform are about 15-20 minutes. 15 minutes doesn't sound like a lot, but it gives the officiant time to say something about the couple, about marriage, offer the vows (if you want to write your own let the officiant know in advance), ring exchange, and some closing words. I would speak with the judge in advance and let them know you are interested in some type of unity ceremony. They should be able to work with you to make your ceremony special for you.

Perfect!! Think I'll be getting to that early this week. She works in the same place as my mom so I can easily go when she's working and ask. Thank you!!!!

You can definitely ask her to customize the ceremony to your liking. I’m sure you won’t be the first ones who want there ceremony to feel more personal!

He should at least meet with you once, get to know you two a little. You should absolutely ask it to be more personalized. definitely have a unity ceremony! This is your big day! It should be exactly what you want. If you are unsure of the judge maybe try an officiant.

Honestly, 15 min probably includes all the stuff you’re mentioning. We had an opening address by our officiant (a family friend), a short reading by her, another reading by a friend, vows, rings, and then the pronouncement/kiss - and the whole thing was around 10 min. The purely civil ceremony you’re thinking of (I do/kiss) would prob only be about 3 minutes. If your officiant said 15 min, I’m sure they are willing to personalize and do what you want!
