forest wedding?

Kaitlyn , on February 27, 2015 at 6:24 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

We're literally getting married in the forest, I'm looking for ideas on setup, seating etc. The reception is walking distance from the ceremony site, were thinking lanterns as decor, very minimal. I'm planning alone and aren't sure where to start where to end what's point a and B. I'm trying not to get lost in the mess and remember that at the end of the day, he will be my husband no matter what the aisle runner looks like lol

Do you have pictures of the space? What sort of feel do you want? You can create seating with logs or hay bales and put cushions on them. Or put out quilts and have a more picnicy feel....

I only have one picture, and its on my fiancees phone. It's big trees state park, in a private environmental campsite (reg camping, no rvs or showers lol) along a creek. The area itself is almost enough decor, but I still feel like its my wedding day and I want it to be beautiful. Were both Celtic descent, and are going for a very natural, pagan feel. The lantern Idea is simply because we don't want the background noise from a generator to light our party.. I'm also concerned about the music aspect of all that... Ahhh. I wanna elope lol

What about edging it with green foliage and hanging the lanterns?

Just make sure you have the bathroom situation figured out.

A forest wedding sounds amazing! The lantern idea I also think would be an awesome touch, something subtle but with high impact. My suggestion would be to focus on accents. There is so much awesome stuff to look at, usually, when in a forest so why not let it really shine by just highlighting it with elements to draw peoples focus towards it. An example might be some sort of lacing or even twigs bundled together that could act as isle markers.

Another thing is to think beyond just filling the space with cool stuff but to think how it would look in your photos or video. Coming from a video background I notice that when there is too much going on it detracts from what the focus is about. Your photo and video pros might spend more time finding the right background that isn't too busy. My opinion is to let the environment highlight to couple as opposed to the couple highlighting the environment. You are already in a good position if you are going with any color other than brown or green because you will pop from the background nicely.

I have sometimes seen people set up their reception and ceremony in the same location as a way to save on set up times between the two.

Another thing I learned that help me keep things in perspective is to evaluate if someone will spend a lot of time looking at a decoration or if they will completely miss it. Also, if you think that the only way someone will notice the decorations is if it shows up in a photographer or the video, then maybe you could cut it from your to-dos. It was an easy way for me and my wife to cut down on the stress of the day.

Kaitlyn, I am so jealous of your outdoor wedding. My FH and I have chosen an Ancient Norse/Viking theme and are tying in Celtic music because he loves it, so we are also playing with pagan elements. I live in Nashville though so there aren't many "forest" options in my budget so I'm having to create that woodland feel indoors.

We plan to line the isle with paper lanterns (and tea lights, since candles are a no) but like the bundled sticks idea for outside. I would start planning around the ceremony site because that's probably going to be easiest and I like to work in chronological order.

Just try to keep in mind which things will have an impact and be seen and keep it simple since your site is already beautiful, there's no need to overdo it. Try to envision the space as your guest will experience it.

we will be placing an arbour similar to the one above, possibly with moss or ivy, probably not a chandelier, even though that's beautiful!! I don't have a photo of the reception area yet.. Hopefully soon though! We're going to a magical feel, but low key. Were not very flashy people, the though of saying our vows in front of everyone is scary !

We are performing a handfasting during our ceremony to tie in our Celtic background..we might have to go with flameless candles as well Smiley sad there's a severe drought up here and have already been warned that all fire might be banned. So I'm having to look into outdoor heaters as well just in case.

Bugspray. Mosquito torches. Real bathrooms, not outhouses. Those are the things that will ruin your wedding for your guests.

I've definitely though of the bug spray... Nothing like having a thousand squito bites day of your wedding.. As for the bathrooms, the "outhouse" is extremely modernized, and it beats a bush or a port a potty !! Lol

Kaitlyn, these are the kind of weddings I service.

I really like your lantern idea -- but they must, must have flameless candles. We are just too dry here in California, and September we'll be tinder dry.

Another idea - that I did for a bride with a Lake Tahoe forest wedding was to put some moss in mason jars (you can use cylinders too), a little bit of water, then put in votives (electric for you!). That was really pretty. Or you could do moss, no water, and do the fairy lights - they'll look like fireflies!

An arbor with moss and ivy will be pretty, but will blend into the background. You might want to put in some daisies (think of a forest meadow!!!), yarrow, etc. They will "pop" and show up. For the ivy, you might want to use variegated ivy (green/cream) so it will stand out a bit more.

    Bathrooms and bug spray...check!!!

It sounds lovely, and I think with the forest as a back drop, you don't need to do much - really, if anything. For your reception, you might even want to do ferns on the tables - something natural.

    Best wishes to you!
