Football vs Wedding

heidi, on September 16, 2014 at 12:05 PM Posted in Planning 0 56

I was reading this article and thought it was interesting how wedding and football can conflict. http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/fans-college-football-poses-wedding-dilemma-25491527

My fiance and I made sure our wedding did not fall on a game day weekend solely because of the horrific amount of football traffic our guests would have to suffer through.

What kinds of decisions have you had to make because of the football season? Would you miss a wedding for it? Would you put up TVs so your guests could watch the game?

My boss was telling me of a wedding where there was a two hour gap between the reception and ceremony. Turns out the bride wasn't taking pictures, but went home to watch the game!

No fall wedding because of hunting and football. And my house overloads with Testosterone every Sunday afternoon and I get banished to the back of the house

I had to plan my wedding around big games since my FH is a sports finatic. I also have a number of hunters in the family who are not very happy with me. But they are all coming anyway!

We made our date before football season! Our reception will be in a UNIVERSITY town! This is a town that is SO big into football that they BURN couches when the team wins! YES start COUCHES on FIRE! Stupidest thing I have ever seen! It's such a big thing that walmart makes "couch-shaped" cakes with candles in it! Let's GOOOO MOUNTAINEERS! lol.

ETA: FFIL has season tickets to the WVU games! I'm sure half our guests do too. It's a BIG thing around here. Also we ended up changing our colors, they happened to be close to WVU colors and people kept asking us "So your having a mountaineer themed wedding?" UMMM No, so we changed it from blue and yellow to blue and silver!

Not being a sports fan, i cannot fathom in a day where DVR is so common why someone would skip attending a wedding because of a game - however, if we had a bunch of fanatics in the families, I would certainly consider that in terms of timing for example, making sure that we did a morning wedding and luncheon reception, and then were in proximity of a sports bar or pub where everyone could go after. That said, I really do not comprehend people choosing a sports game over family, if it comes down to it. That's just sad, in my personal opinion.

My nephews aren't coming to my wedding because TN is playing Florida that day. Yeah I know but I knew that was a possibility when I planned it. I even told my brother that I would understand if he didn't come (not saying I would have liked it but I do understand because they have season tickets and that's a lot of money). My brother however said that his little sister was more important to him than seeing the game live. Now I can't promise that he won't have the ballgame on during the reception and I'm good with that.

College football is probably not as big here as it is elsewhere. We have diehard Penn State fans, but it's not as if we are close to the stadium (close to 4 hours away). It's pro games and concerts that cause issues around here. Traffic is absolutely horrible if they have more than 1 thing scheduled.

We're having an early spring wedding so it wouldn't clash with college football or baseball. FH had to miss a wedding last year because he was a manager at our college football stadium and now he works for a minor league baseball team.

We didn't consider football at all when selecting our date; however, our family wanted to do a brunch on Sunday (the day after the wedding) and we said no because the Seahawks play at 10am and we'll be in bed at our hotel chomping down on some room service cheering on our team Smiley smile

College football is not as big near me as the NFL, so as long as it was not on a Sunday we were fine. On another note we are going to a football game the day after our wedding, we have season tickets.

I planned my wedding so we wouldn't be missing the OSU-Michigan game. I rarely miss watching a game. lol j/k we went with a Sunday wedding at the end of November for other reasons. My family (myself included) are big OSU fans, I would have preferred not to have the wedding during a football game but if things panned out that way then they did. Luckily what worked out the best for us was a Sunday & no interference with college football. College football comes around every year, and a wedding only rolls around once.

This isn't a big college football area, so we weren't too worried about doing a Saturday in the fall. And we knew that a home Ravens game would be great fun the next day, although it turns out they're away that weekend. We've already arranged for everyone to walk a couple blocks to a place that shows all NFL games on tons of TV's for Sunday afternoon. We have lots of different NFL fans coming.

BUT I was certainly not concerned about baseball when we planned. If things keep going the way they are right now, there's a very good chance we'll have baseball in Baltimore that weekend! Might have to talk to the venue about getting a TV in reception.

One of FH's only requests was that we have a Saturday wedding because he didn't want it to interfere with NFL football (our families are not college football fans). He went to his cousin's all Sunday wedding when he was in high school and there was a tv in the bar area. The wedding was happening at the same time as a Pats game so naturally a bunch of guys were crowded around the TV. The bride flipped out and turned the TV off and demanded that bartender keep the TV off...bridezilla honestly. You can't expect men from the northeast to NOT watch the Pats game.

So he was admittant about that from the beginning!

I didn't take anyone's football feelings into consideration. To me that's absolutely ridiculous. If they don't want to come to my wedding b/c they want to watch a sports game then that's on them. FH is a huge Fantasy football guy so he always watches the games but that isn't stopping us from getting married on a Sunday in December. He can check his phone for updates during cocktail hour. lol

What Melissa said. I did not even consider football schedules when choosing a date.

If someone chose to go to a football game over my wedding I'd be pretty offended. Football games happen multiple times a year, every year. A person's wedding should only (with a little luck Smiley winking ) Happen once in their lifetime.

I'm kinda of curious of what some of the brides will think when there will be a BUNCH of people checking scores on their phones because they didn't "consider" football season. If your offended that people won't come to your wedding because of a "game", will you be offended when a bunch of people are "looking" on their phones for most of the wedding? Just curious if anyone has ever thought of "THAT"?
