Food/drink for Chf?

Shelby, on May 8, 2019 at 5:40 PM Posted in Planning 0 3
Apologies if this doesn’t go here, this was the best category I could find. My dad was recently diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure, meaning he cannot have alcohol and he has to strictly limit his sodium intake. My fiancé and I had already considered having a dry wedding, as there are many benefits and we have several other guests who cannot drink alcohol for various reasons. So I have two questions:
Does anyone have crowd-friendly low-sodium food ideas? We’re doing a potluck-style dinner.
Does anyone have simple but creative punch/lemonade/tea/mocktail ideas that are also crowd-friendly?
TIA!

With CHF he is going to have to watch his fluid intake as a whole, not just with alcohol. So I don’t know if you necessarily need to have a dry wedding just for him. For foods, try and stay away from processed foods. Anything grilled generally has less sodium, unless you covered it in sauces and marinades. But there are plenty of recipients out there using different herbs and spices so you can avoid salt and high sodium sauces. Whatever you choose, definitely do a test run beforehand to make sure you like the recipe! There’s a ton of information you can find online for low sodium diets. Start with stuff from actual healthcare organizations and cardiac research institutions, and avoid the blogs until you know what to look for. If you go with your dad to his cardiologist (who he should be seeing to manage this), they should be able to provide diet information to you. Also, request a referral to a dietician who can help immensely. Since you’re not looking for fancy foods, anything they give you would probably work great!

I would just make him a special plate. Get what you want and the caterers should be able to accommodate with a low sodium meal!!! Something plant based is likely going to be an easier low sodium option but it will come down to his preferences and the abilities of the caterer. I’d start there, ask the caterer what they can make based on his dietary restrictions!!!

Hey Shelby! I'm sorry that your family is going through this, but it's so great that you seem to be taking it in your stride. Jeanie had some really excellent suggestions. Have you thought about what exactly you would like to do? It would certainly be a little more difficult to have your entire meal to be low-sodium, but also it would be very manageable if this is the route you decide to go down.
