Food!!!

Amie, on August 16, 2019 at 3:39 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 8
So I'm wanting to the wedding food myself and I've got some friends and family that will help make stuff to eat. I'm looking for tips and suggestions on what to make though. I'm going to make a couple big pasta dishes and maybe baked chicken potatoes. What else would be good to make and inexpensive to make in bulk?

How many people are you serving?

Do you have large or extra refrigeration to keep large amounts of food?

Do any guests have dietary needs or food allergies?

Have these family members offered to cook? Do they work in the food industry or regularly cook for large parties (understanding food safety and scaled up recipes)?

Do you have a venue that allows self-catering?

Does your event liability insurance allow self-catering?

Cooking on your wedding day is stressful for you and your family. Food isn't the best thing to DIY to save money because it can sometimes cost more when it's all said and done. Plus there's the issue of food safety and guests potentially getting food poisoning. Please hire a caterer. BBQ and Italian are usually the cheapest catering options!

When in doubt, keep it simple! This really depends on your venue, absolutely don’t attempt this unless your venue has a kitchen you can use, and make sure to buy/rent chafing dishes, you can buy a set of disposable ones for $30 at Walmart. With that being said.

    1 meat
    1 starch
    1 veg
    1-2 salads
    1 roll option
    2-3 finger foods for apps

Chicken is your best bet, make it a standout yummy chicken though.
Hearty pasta dish or an easy potato dish like gratin
Fresh green beans with butter and lemon are easy
Have at least one basic chopped salad, more fun salad is optional. I like holiday salad.
Basic dinner rolls, don’t make them yourself.
Chips and dips, veg and fruit trays. Nothing difficult!

As a former bride who did this for my first wedding, do yourself a favor and DO NOT do it. We did pasta buffet with 3 sauces and it was SOOOO much more work than we thought it would be. I've worked for a caterer and thought it would be easy but it was a nightmare. I was an hour late, and my hair looked like total CRAP because I was so caught up in the food that I ran out of time. I ended up crying over my pictures because I looked horrible on ALL of them.
