Food Trucks vs Catering

Candis, on February 6, 2017 at 6:06 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

Hey guys! What do you think about having food trucks at a wedding? I've seen the latest hype on them and I'm just wondering if any of you have found it to be cheaper and better or a waste of time and should've gone with a caterer instead. By the way we're inviting around 250 people for our wedding. Would love your thoughts!

For 250 people I feel like you'd need more than a few trucks. Otherwise people will be waiting forever for their food. This will probably cancel out any money you'd save.

The easiest way to save money on catering is to cut your guest list.

For larger crowds, I don't recommend food trucks.

250 is definitely a large crowd. I'd consider a caterer instead.

I've only heard of food trucks being used for late night snacks. That's not a meal. You need a caterer.

I've hired food trucks for charity events. For that many people you're going to need several trucks. Ask if each truck charges per item or charges a flat fee. You're probably going to spend a couple of grand per truck. Depending on your venue, the caterer is also the one who helps with linens, tables, chairs etc. so if you don't have one you'll have to make sure those items are covered as well.

With 250 guests you would want several trucks, so guests aren't in line the whole time waiting to order food. You may also want to select 1-2 items from each truck vendor's menu so they're not custom making everyone's meal. From that standpoint, there might be more coordination effort and not much of a price difference from a traditional caterer. I'd recommend choosing the one that is the least complicated from a planning standpoint.

Edit - if you really want a food truck, do this for the rehearsal dinner when you have a smaller crowd.

You'd probably be spending way more money on food trucks than you would on traditional catering for 250 people. It sounds like a potential logistical nightmare with that many people.

Besides what PPs have pointed out, another possible issue with food trucks is that the prices are usually painted on the side. It can be a bit awkward to know exactly how much that Korean burrito costs out in the wild. Maybe you'd like to do a compromise and get appetizers from that, say, lobster roll truck and desserts from that really great roving mini-donut maker.
