Food Truck for Wedding

Ava, on January 6, 2022 at 4:58 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 3 13
We are considering hiring a food truck for our wedding of 40 guests in October. A lot of the caterers want to charge an arm and a leg for a micro wedding and we don’t think it’s worth it. We are having a rustic wedding in a historic manor. Would a good trick be tacky? My Mom and sister seem to think so. What do you think?

I liked the "good trick"!!! Are mom and sister paying for your wedding? If not, they need to butt out! If you are doing a rustic wedding, I think food truck(s) can be tons of fun. With that being said, will people be able to eat by/near/around the trucks or are they going to have to go inside that historic manor to sit to eat? That is really the only negative thing I can think of for that type of event. You can seriously have a ton of fun decorating outside. I googled decorating for a food truck wedding and wow, looks like a blast can be had. I say GO FOR IT!!! (especially since it is a nice, small wedding)

I think your guests will be outside lining up for food, than in your historic manor. If you don't have dancing in your reception, this could be a nice dessert or after hours option.

I think it would be super fun! If that is the vibe you are going for then go for it But it is definitely not a cheaper option than traditional catering. You can ask about have it only for a certain time frame like 1 or 2 hours rather than an all night thing. I agree with the dessert food truck option after dinner... Maybe that would be a little less.

The problem with food trucks is that not everyone will be eating at the same time. You will have guests finished eating before half of them even get their food.

This. They are not designed or set up to feed more than 1-2 people at a time. It’s why you see food trucks at fairs and festivals that have been there for decades and can’t serve more than one at a time.

If you are on a budget, ask your favorite local restaurant to provide drop off catering with staff hired from thumbtack.com

How do local food truck prices compare to local caterers and restaurants? That's the only way you will know if this is actually a good idea, budget-wise. 40 guests is a pretty good number for food truck service (more than that and food would take too long!).

As for whether or not it's "tacky", it depends on how your wedding is set up. Is the reception inside the historic manor (I don't actually understand how the "rustic" bit fits with this, so maybe you mean it's outdoors?)? If your reception is inside, then it's not that guest-friendly to make them stand outside in line to get their food, especially with potentially iffy weather conditions. If your wedding is outside already, and you are prepared for whatever weather (tents, heaters, etc.), then a food truck makes more sense.

I was really wanting to do a pizza food truck that offers salad and passed apps. However, they weren't on my approved vender list so we went with a caterer. It was cute because you could pick from four pizzas plus pick a custom signature pizza just like you would a signature cocktail.

Food trucks themselves are ok but I would be concerned with the line up. It could take some time to feed all of your guests.

Definitely not tacky! I actually would prefer the food from a food truck than a plated dish from a caterer as a guest. However, I would think about how it would work logistically if your venue is inside. A historic manor sounds lovely but if the food is outside people may loiter outside rather than enjoy the venue. And how is the weather in your area during October, would it be cold for guests to wait outside? I reached out to some of my favorite local restaurants to see if they could cater (also having about 40 guests but outside), their rates were a lot more affordable than wedding caterers, have you checked any restaurants in your area that you like? They may have some options too that are on the more affordable (and tasty) side.

I’m doing a buffet for mine but it’s not a lot of people. 70 if everyone comes (which we already know isn’t happening) so small wedding. Some people think it’s tacky but I like it🤷🏻‍♀️ More options for people to choose from

A buffet is definitely not tacky! It's just a different level of formality, but still great to have as a guest.
