Food timeline?

Kristin, on August 26, 2019 at 2:44 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10
We don't have an end time for our wedding since we're having it an Airbnb. The ceremony and reception are all at the same place (it's on a few acres) and the ceremony will start at 11:30am. It's a small wedding (35ish) with a more laid-back vibe and we'll do pictures right after for about 45 min. FH and I were discussing the food situation yesterday and he said we should have the caterers serve food around 4pm but I think that's too late considering the time we're starting. I suggested we have them come closer to 2pm. If we do do 4pm then we would have appetizers and platters to hold guests over until then.

Couple things I should add-almost everyone is coming in from out of state so everyone is staying in the area for a few days. So there's very few who will be driving back home afterwards. And 20 of our guests are staying at the Airbnb.

Assuming you have a 30 minute ceremony, you would be done with pictures around 12:45. I would do lunch at 1pm. I would be too hungry by 2 and probably leave to go find food.

I would be pretty confused (even if I was staying at the house) if we had to wait 2-4 hours for the meal portion of the wedding. Pictures for 45 minutes I get, but then I’d assume the meal would begin as soon as those were done, especially since you’re getting married right around lunch time.

I agree with PP's. While 2 isn't completely unreasonable, I would try to serve lunch at 1. People will start to get cranky and restless, I'm not sure why you'd want to postpone the meal that long.

If your ceremony is 30 minutes I would do 11:30-12 ceremony, 12-1 cocktail hour, and then lunch at 1. If I didn’t get food for a few hours after the ceremony I’d probably leave and go get food somewhere.

That's what I was thinking too. I'd rather have it served earlier and we can always arrange for a late-night snack later on.

I figured 2 would give us a little buffer in case things run behind.

Nothing wrong with having a buffer! But if the day of rolls around and things are going smoothly, I would serve lunch as soon as everyone is ready, just so no one is waiting with a rumbly tummy lol Smiley smile

Absolutely! Regardless, we'll have appetizers out while we're doing pics so our guests can snack and drink

Agree that 4 is way too late. If I go to a wedding for 11:30, that means I haven’t had lunch (and let’s be real, maybe not breakfast), and I am gonna be read to eat pretty much ASAP. Standard fare at weddings is ceremony -> cocktail hour -> reception with meal not too long after it starts. It’s okay to change it up a bit of course, but bear in mind that’s more or less the expectation. I think that it would be okay to push meal time off until 2, but ONLY if you’re serving apps in that interim time where you’re doing pictures.

My thoughts exactly. I know I'll be starving by 4pm and probably won't have eaten breakfast either. We would have appetizers regardless of whether we do lunch at 1 or 2pm so guests can snack while we're doing photos.
