Food tastings

Cassy, on June 25, 2019 at 3:44 PM Posted in Planning 0 12
When did everyone, or when will you, do tastings for caterers and how far in advance did you book them? I started looking around and got a few proposals back but was wondering if it’s too early to go for a tasting. My wedding is early Sept 2020.

My venue was at a restaurant already with set menus so we decided to do a tasting of that food maybe six months or more before so that we could make adjustments to the menu.

A couple of caterers we contacted are already booked for our date (9/12/2020), so I would say it's definitely not too early. Good luck!

My venue is all inclusive. We did the food tasting in Feb, after we put down the 2nd deposit.

Our venue includes the catering, and the venue manager told us that we will do tastings and choose the menu about 3 months before the wedding. Part of that is due to the fact that some of their menu offerings are "seasonal" so it's best to do it closer to the day, when they know what will be on the menu at that time.

We have a required caterer for our venue. Knowing this, we met with them in September 2018 (July 2020 wedding) and had a tasting with a tentative contract. We didn’t like the food we chose to taste, so we attended their open house in October and changed our menu. We’re able to change anything (food, numbers, etc.) up until 3 weeks before the wedding.

We started tastings 12 months out, we had 5 caterer options our venue allowed and they were very popular so we didn't want them to book. We did 3 tastings and made a decision 10 months out.

We skipped tastings for our DW & local reception. Our venues had great ratings and had catering on-site. We just didn’t have time and each venue wanted $100+ so we skipped. Food was fabulous.

My venue offers in-house catering. We went to our tasting in December for our August wedding.

We are starting our catering quest and are a week and a year away from wedding day. We have 5 we want to have tastings with and probably a few more. I'm expecting this process to take 2 months or 3.

We chose a caterer that owns a restaurant and we have tasted their food from previous banquets and parties we've attended there so we knew what we liked. Could you ask a couple of them if you could do a food tasting without booking (may be a small fee)? That's something you could do now to get an idea of how the food will be and if you like one more than the others, you can ask about their booking requirements (some may not book this far in advance and others may as they book up quickly) then do another tasting a few months before the wedding to pick your menu.
