Food option for guests

Juanita, on September 29, 2019 at 10:13 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 15
This past Saturday we had our food tasting; we sampled 6 horse d’oeuvres & 3 main courses. My dilemma is that I am not sure if I should give my guests 3 food options or only 2, +Vegetarian of course.
1: Salmon with mango glaze (fish option is a must)
2: London Broil
3: Chicken Marsala
The venue manager said it’s best to stick to 2 options as it would be easier on us when making names for seats, which are required to include the chosen meal. Is 2 options really easier than 3? Easier for us or caterer? Also, If I only offer 2 it would deff have to be the fish and steak. Even though the chicken was great but for a wedding I feel as steak and fish would be “fancier.” Thoughts ?

I don’t think 2 vs 3 options makes any difference for *you* “ease” wise — though in many cases a third option is more expensive than only offering 2 (or a fish or a beef may be an add on). If the cost is equal, there’s no reason on your end not to do 3 options instead of 2. I think it’s easy enough to code your escort cards with three options— I’ve seen people do colors, sticker shapes, stamps to differentiate, and I think many of those would be just as easy with 3 options than 2.

all that said, we only did beef and fish at our wedding (package only included 2 options [plus silent veg]) and it went over well. ....I do LOVE chicken Marsala though, haha.

I would probably do fish and chicken. I think more people will eat chicken over red meat

I agree with Mcskipper that it won't really make a difference for you "ease wise" if you offer 2 or 3 options. If the cost is not much more, I would offer 3. I had 3 options: salmon, chicken, and steak with lobster. I just used a legend on my place cards so servers knew which guest chose which meal. 3 trees = steak with lobster, 2 trees = salmon, and 1 tree = chicken. I also had a silent vegetarian option. Here are pics of the RSVP card with the 3 meal icons and then of the place card at the place setting with the tree legend.

I don’t see how it would make it any easier. Making seating charts is tedious even for those with a buffet who don’t need to mark food choices. If it’s not saving you any money, I would stick with the three options. I personally don’t like chicken marsala (I know I’m an odd one out on that!), so to have two other options would be nice. Even though you tell them what each guest wants, I’ve never been to a wedding where the waitress hasn’t verified my menu choice before serving it. And I know for a fact my fiancé has forgotten his choice and changed it, and has never been questioned or a big deal.

I would say it makes it easier on the caterer. We were only allowed to chose 2 meal options. But they have a vegan/GF options for those who need. So instead of including it as an option i had to have them tell me if their dietary needs called for a special meal ... a little frustrating but whatever. Personally I chose BBQ brisket and Chicken. The fish wasn't an option in my package :/ If you want to pick 3 i suggest picking 3! The guests have to choose in advance anyway so they'll know how much of each to order.

We are doing chicken or steak, and then there will be a vegetarian option that also happens to be vegan. We love steak and I'm not a huge seafood person, so we just decided to offer chicken or steak. We added some shrimp to cocktail hour for those seafood lovers. We could have offered three options plus vegetarian. It wasn't more money with our caterer, other than the seafood option was a lot more expensive. They did let us know that when there is a choice, about 75% of people choose beef. That seemed high to me but maybe it is about right.

Okay great to hear that. I was worried as to why the event manager insisted in 2 options since there is no price difference. I think we’ll deff go with 3 options and the silent veg. Thank you!!!!

That’s where my head was at, that most people, especially men, would choose the beef option. Also a lot of my guests I know like fish but then if it’s only beef and steak some people don’t like either. Lol. Guess going with 3 options to “try” and please all my guests!
