Food logistics for remote Yosemite wedding

Lala, on May 18, 2022 at 11:08 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8
Hello everyone! I’m planning my intimate Yosemite National Park wedding, and I’m struggling with what’s the best option for post-ceremony picnic food for 15 people. I’m assuming we’ll do cold food like sandwiches, potato salad, etc., since it’s easier to keep things cold in coolers on the long drive to the ceremony.

The location is more remote, about 1-2 hours from any good food. There is no electricity or running water. I’m hoping we can score a picnic table, but we’ll be sharing the space with other park visitors so it’s not a given.
We’re arriving at a park hotel the day before, but the mini fridge won’t be big enough to bring in 15 meals.
Here are my ideas. I’d love feedback, or to hear if anyone has done something different!
1. See if the hotel will make to-go meals morning of, before we drive 1.5 hours to the ceremony site.
2. Use a caterer (or restaurant) in a town outside the park (2 hours from ceremony site), and have a family member pick the food up morning of, on the way.
3. Hire a caterer to drive the couple of hours to the park and do on-site cooking. (Is this even possible without electricity?)
Thank you if you’ve read this far! ☺️

I like option #2! You could explain the situation. I’m sure they could pack the food strategically so it doesn’t get cold or wet or smushed. They could even provide coolers.

One option you didn’t mention is almost like option #3 but instead of hiring a caterer to cook on premises, you could hire them to deliver and set up the cold meals. Pasta salad, sandwiches, waters, drinks, napkins, plates, collecting garbage. They can just be a set of extra hands to set up and clean up and bring all the trash out of the park. They could even bring a folding table?
I love your wedding ideas so far. Good luck!!!

A lot of caterers have mobile kitchens. They could definitely make your food on site!

Are you staying at the Ahwanhee? Can you not go back there after your ceremony and have the “reception” at the hotel?

Thank you! That’s a great idea and very worry-free. I’m sure they would also have ways to keep the food cool while it’s out on location. I’d have to buy and transport buckets, ice, etc. I don’t think I’ll want to deal with it. ☺️

We are! That would have been ideal, but we’ll be up off Tioga Rd. for sunset photos and we won’t be back in time before the restaurant closes. 🙁

Can you arrange catering with the restaurant? Sometimes places will open/stay open different hours for an event.

I can definitely ask. It’s tough because we won’t be getting back down to the hotel until after 9 PM, which may be a bit late for our older parents to start eating then. And by that point it will have been hours since the ceremony, I don’t want anyone to be hangry. 😂 I’ll be calling the hotel next week so maybe they’ll make an exception or will have a perfect solution! 🤞 Thank you!
