Hi friends! I am getting quotes for food and alcohol for events in the greater boston area and I have been shocked so far at pricing. My most recent quote was 50$ pp open bar and 54$ pp for the lowest buffet option. Does this seem reasonable for the area? We are having 150 guests and with these prices its more than 75% of our budget. I know the food and drink is going to be probably the most expensive piece but this does not even include the cost just to rent the venue. EK! Overwhelmed.

We're having our reception in Sharon (about half hour South of Boston) and the open bar is $35 pp for 5.5 hours, the passed hors d'oeuvres range from $250-450 per 100 pieces and the entrées are around $40-55 pp so that sounds about right.

    ETA: adjusted entree prices

I'm in St Louis where things are not quite as expensive as east coast but I think the food and bar was over 50% of my total cost, probably somewhere between 50-60%.

Thanks for the feedback ladies! seems like what I am hearing is the norm - I do think the open bar price is a bit much so I will keep looking at that. I am nervous about consumption with 150 guests, I cannot even count on one hand the number of guests at our wedding that do not drink Smiley sad

Boston is a big city, that sounds about right.

if you've got a lot of drinkers, dont do consumption, it might run you more than just a flat price.

Yeah consumption is definitely know your crowd, it works for us bc half of FH's family doesn't drink at all and there are more guests interspersed that drink very lightly. If almost every guest is a moderate drinker then you are probably better off paying a flat price, keep checking! Usually the standard around here is 37-40 so I would keep looking!!

That seems in line with I've seen in the Philadelphia suburbs. We're paying $118 with everything included. Some of the other venues we looked at had alcohol packages at $35-50 per person.
