Food Ideas

Heather, on October 7, 2019 at 4:23 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 6

I'm getting married, but I don't think I want a full meal. What are some good ideas?

You could do a late morning ceremony with light brunch or an early afternoon ceremony with just cake and drinks Smiley smile

If your wedding falls over a meal time you’ll need to serve what constitutes a full meal. So even if it’s not a plated meal you’ll need heavy appetizers and some different stations which can be fun but most of the time ends up being more expensive. Just some food for thought. I personally love appetizers like charcuterie boards, meatballs, kabobs, bruschetta, and something like a carving station and mashed potato bar.

The general rule for weddings is that if your event is scheduled during the time of a meal, you should provide something to eat for your guests. My mind immediately jumps to a formal dinner for weddings, but that tradition is apparently becoming less strict these days. I was just looking at this last night as a last-ditch effort to reduce costs (our venue locks us into 5 very expensive caterers). Here are some options:

    1. Heavy appetizers (protein-heavy, very filling, but more casual vibe)

    2. Cocktail party reception (timing: early afternoon or after dinner time)

    3. Breakfast, brunch, or lunch (timing: obviously brunch time)

I personally attended a wedding a couple years ago that had self-serve stations (basically the heavy appetizer option) and it really worked out well. They had sliders, tacos, cups of fries, ramekins of mac n cheese, etc. The food was really tasty and the vibe was very relaxed and everyone really just focused on the party and having a great time with the couple.

We're doing heavy apps. Bacon burger sliders, carnitas tacos, green chili mac and cheese, roasted brussel sprouts, caesar salad.

I went to an appetizer and dessert cocktail wedding that was really nice. Actually very upscale.

Also, I think brunch weddings are awesome!
