Food ideas for small reception!?

Sarah, on March 29, 2018 at 7:18 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 6
We are doing an early afternoon ceremony and a short reception (probably 2 hours max). Being a short ceremony/reception, we aren’t sure what style of food to serve. Originally we wanted a full plated meal, and now we’re thinking buffet style, but we want to put a twist on it. Maybe a couple different appetizer stations throughout the room? At a loss here! Thanks!

Talk with a caterer or restaurant for ideas. Caterers usually love to be a little creative and it sounds like your event would fit the bill.

I like the idea of stations in this case, like a to-order pasta or carving stations. Another option is build-your own foods, like a mashed potato, sundae, or Mac &a cheese bars. I would be tempted to do a really awesome Viennese table too for dessert if it's in your budget!

I love stations, and if that's the direction you go make sure there are plenty of tables and some passed apps too. I had a friend who had a perogi station, Korean BBQ station, baked potato bar, and a few passed apps at her cocktail hour and it was phenomenal. If you're two hours falls over a meal I would make sure there are lots of heavy app options that people can piecemeal together to their own dinner. Like pp said that can include pasta bars or Mac n cheese stations.

Stations were more expensive with our caterer.

Id reach out to a bunch of caterers to see what they'd recommend.

I think it depends on what time the reception will be held.

Will guests be skipping lunch or snacking on the fly to get to your ceremony? If yes, then you need to serve more filling food to be the equivalent of a meal.

If the ceremony is at 2 or 2:30 pm, then light refreshments are more appropriate for a mid- afternoon snack.
