Food for thought: All weddings look the same

The longer I'm engaged and dreaming about/thinking of/planning for my wedding, the more I realize that social media has a pretty powerful hold on the wedding industry. I feel like it's hard to plan a truly personal event anymore, because even the ideas I think are unique are things I found on the internet somewhere. Give it a week, and I realize that everyone's doing it (pampas grass ceremony circles, anyone?). I don't think it's a terrible thing, and trends happen for a reason! But I do wonder what it was like when our mothers and grandmothers were planning their weddings, where they got their inspo from, and if they felt less of the "keeping up with the Joneses" pressure that we feel due to the constant presence of social media in our lives, always inundating us with the next million dollar wedding that we can't afford but MUST find a way to recreate.

If you've found inspiration for your wedding from somewhere other than the internet, please share it!

YEEEESSSSSS! I say this all the time… Too many weddings look the EXACT same 🤦🏽‍♀️. If I see anymore eucalyptus leaves, pampas grass, a zillion signs everywhere, everything made using a cricut machine, lace wedding dresses with illusion backs/necklines, photobooths etc. etc. etc..... I think I’ll scream!!!! 😫

Sadly, all of these weddings look identical. I totally understand trends. But there’s no need to include every single trend into one wedding. I swear... too many weddings look like the couples all purchased the same “ 50-piece wedding kit”, opened up the box and pulled out all of the same items. 😂
But I think the real problem is that not everyone is creative and some can’t think outside of the box. So I kinda understand why they just follow the crowd.... because it’s easier.
There was no way that I was going to pay for and plan a copy cat wedding. So, we used our venue as the inspiration/foundation for the plans and decor. The venue has a 1920’s speakeasy vibe. But we’re not doing a Great Gatsby theme. It’ll be more of a subtle “vintage vegas” vibe. The venue is awesome, sexy and unique. We have 2 totally different color schemes for the ceremony and the reception (meaningful colors to FH and I) ... 2 different & fun cocktail hour entertainers... cute stationery pieces and decor items.
I haven’t purchased a wedding magazine and I don’t look online for “inspiration” because there’s no need. Also because it will lead you down a road of unoriginality where you’re trying to “keep up with the Jones’” wedding style (like you mentioned”).
So best wishes and happy planning your personalized wedding!!!!

I agree aha. My bff asked “is it ok if I do a bubble exit too?” Because I did one for my wedding. And I was like of course omg I only wish I kept my bubbles for you (because I had asked if she wanted it for her wedding but she said no so I gave it to someone else). At this point in time not a whole lot of things are unique anymore when it comes to weddings OTHER than the couples love story

It really doesn’t bother me. As you said, there are trends in everything - fashion, interior design, automotive design, hairstyles, architecture, etc. Trends managed to spread long before the internet and social media. So long as I think something is beautiful, I don’t really care if it’s “unique”

I think almost none of my wedding was cookie cutter. I completely agree that most weddings look the same though! My wedding was in a historic library, and we used moss and candles and stones and ferns running down the two long banquet rectangles. We repurposed our Birchwood chuppah over the sweetheart table. Guests wore black or white, my bridesmaids were in ivory, I wore a lavender gown. We walked down the aisle to string instrumentals of 311 and Zeppelin. I had my brother as my man of honor and most of the music was 90s rock and alternative (with rock classics). No major cake cutting, no bouquet toss, no games, no journey nor non Jovi, no line dancing. We wrote our own vows. It was fun.

We had a rule: if we couldn't remember it from other peoples' weddings, it didn't matter.

So, we took our passions and fused them into a wedding. We themed it around our favorite baseball team (the Phillies), had a swordfight (we're actors), and found a venue where the view was the decor.

It's been nearly 7 months and people are still telling us what a great wedding it was, how much fun they had - and it's because we made it about US, not about a trend. (That said: if fake flowers are a trend, go with it! So cheap!)

My favorite bit is how we can remember our wedding in terms of the things that were specific to us. Our favorite mascot on a baseball-themed cake with theatre masks as the stitching. Our officiant gently mocking us with our baseball obsession, but also using that as a beautiful launch for a sermon about shared passion - and then having to ask us to step apart, so he could, y'know, deliver the sermon. (We hadn't seen each other in 21 hours and got a little excited.)

So. My advice is to follow our rule up there. And make it about the two of you!

So true! Your wedding sounds like a blast—I like the idea of playing up the strengths and atmosphere of the venue
