Food Allergies/Preferences

Anne, on February 13, 2017 at 10:53 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

My dad is diabetic, my cousin is allergic to gluten. My lawyer and his wife are vegetarians. I know these things and am making accommodations for their food at the reception.

That accounts for 4 people out of 60 invited. How do I ask/learn about who has what allergy/preference? I didn't put this on my invite. I can ask on the wedding website but how does that get communicated back?

I don't want to alienate people at the reception because I had no knowledge in advance of special requests.

I've seen it on RSVP cards or an insert with the invitations. The inserts usually say something like "please let the couple/bride and groom know of any food allergies or dietary restrictions", and RSVP cards sometimes have a blank line for it.

You could also always ask your guests personally. I included it on the RSVP cards and the website, just to make sure. I've also been asking around to make sure I don't miss anyone.

My STD and Website asked for feedback and to provide us with any allergies. Your wedding website should have a CONTACT US section or they can just email you or call you etc.

Guests have to respond with meal choice when they rsvp, there's a line there asking them to contact us with any dietary needs or restrictions.

Our reception is at a restaurant so they don't require the selection ahead of time. I like the idea of the RSVP and the contact us on the website. I have room block stuff on the website but I was considering an insert card. I'll make a request for food preferences on that card too. There are very few people we invited that I talk to regularly. The bulk are FH's family, friends, and coworkers. Most I have never met.

    Thanks for the input

@Samtoine, not always. If it's a buffet then there isn't that section on an RSVP.

We asked our parents and grandparents who are always involved in food prep for family gatherings.

We are putting a line on the RSVP card that asks for any dietary restrictions.

It's a plated meal at the restaurant but they said they don't want selections ahead of time. I'm having an insert card made with that question along with room block info.

I'm thankful for this forum because it makes us think about these things in advance that otherwise may not enter our minds.

Wait, I'm confused now @Anne. It's at restaurant, but they don't want selections ahead of time? How long will guests have to wait for their food? Because that's how caterers are able to be prepared. That would make me nervous about wait times for food.

Aside from that, including menus as an insert card, putting a line on the RSVP, having it on the website, and calling those you can are really all you can do.

They said they will take orders during cocktail hour. I agree, I'm nervous about this, but they said they do it all the time.

Is there a way they would take selections anyway? Just because they do it all the time or prefer not to know ahead of time doesn't mean they won't do it. How can they guarantee they'll get an order from everyone during that time? As a guest who had to wait an incredibly long time for food at a wedding, that would not be okay for me.

We included a statement on our RSVP card to notify us of any allergies or restrictions. I've been to a wedding where the wait staff took our orders once we were seated and it seemed like everything was timed perfectly fine. The courses prior to the main dish were served shortly after our orders were taken, and I didn't feel like I was waiting on anything or starving.
