Food allergies.....

Pam, on April 27, 2022 at 8:06 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 9

We are one month out from my daughter's wedding. I just became aware of several guest and one groomsman's food allergies. We planned for all the food allergies/restrictions we were aware of: 95% of the meal is gluten free, there is a vegetarian entree option (not vegan) and sides are vegetarian (no meat or dairy in the veggies)...but this doesn't cover these allergies that were just brought to my attention. We need to add a vegan meal that is gluten free and does not have either potatoes or corn.

There is a lovely Mediterranean restaurant that I can get a small catering order from that would work. Dolmades and falafel platter for 10 with rice and sauce on the side for $60. These items are gluten free, vegan, no potatoes, no corn. Our caterer could also provide a suitable meal but we would have to order a minimum of 20 servings at a significantly higher cost.

The current menu:

Grilled chicken breast with red pepper sauce and goat cheese crumbles, Seasoned shrimp, Spinach and Feta Chicken Sausage, chicken nuggets primarily for the kids (gluten), roasted red potatoes, fresh grilled corn off the cob, green beans, cole slaw, gf corn muffins and the vegetarian entree is an individual vegetable quiche. There will be fruit, veggies and crackers with spinach and artichoke dip and hummus as appetizers.

My biggest concern is making sure that everyone has a good meal to eat. I think the dolmades and falafel platter will check that box. My secondary concern is to not appear to be thoughtless with this option - I'd hate for someone to look at their plate and think 'this is an abomination'.

I'm feeling like I'm overthinking it and maybe I should just put it to bed. My question: Does anyone have a strong feeling against the falafel and dolmades, or feel like that would be just too different from the current menu?

Ideally I would speak directly to the guests/groomsman with the allergies but that is not possible. I am the bride's mom. These guests are on the grooms side. I have spoken to the grooms mother. My daughter has spoken to the groom. No further or more specific information is forthcoming.

Thank you.

I think you’re being very considerate! I’m surprised they didn’t make you aware of food restrictions sooner, especially ones that exclude so many food groups. It sounds like you’re doing your best to accommodate them, I’d go with the falafel and stop stressing about it. If they don’t like what you provide them then they should have given you more information, and that’s on them.

I think dolmades and falafel are a great idea! In my experience, people with food restrictions, and especially vegans, tend to like a variety of foods. I imagine they'll be happy to be accommodated at the very least.

I love dolmades and falafel! I think you are being very considerate going out of your way to find a full meal for these guests, especially since this information was given to you last minute. Some of the vegan guests attending my wedding said they are used to salad and veggies at weddings, so I feel these guests will really appreciate this meal!

Thanks so much for the feedback.

I suspect that these guests didn't alert us to their needs because they didn't want to be a bother. and planned to make do with whatever was available. The only reason I became aware of these restrictions is because the groom's mom and I met last night to review the seating chart and make a plan to follow up with a couple of folks who have yet to rsvp. She mentioned it in the context of talking about the rehearsal dinner and trying to find a menu that would work for everyone. Otherwise I'd probably have remained unaware unless I noticed folks picking around a sparse dinner plate at the reception. Very glad to have the info now when there's time to figure it out! Again, thank you!

I have really severe food allergies, and I'm always incredibly appreciative of people who go out of their way to make sure there's something safe for me to eat. It sounds like the Mediterranean place is reputable enough that they'd be able to provide a good meal to those guests with allergies, and there would be enough guests that would have that meal that it wouldn't look like a backup plan or make anyone who gets it feel like they're alienated from the rest of the guests by having a separate meal from everyone else. I agree with others that it's odd these guests didn't make you aware of their allergies sooner, but it sounds like you've made a great effort to accommodate them as best as possible.

I am someone with a variety of food restrictions and often choose to make do with anything provided so it’s likely they didn’t mention it for that reason too.

I would be beyond thrilled with the food you are planning for them and super appreciative!!

Speaking as someone who has several food allergies, I think you're doing an awesome job! I always keep snacks in my purse when I go to events like that in case there isn't anything I can eat, and I also keep my EpiPen and allergy meds with me in case of cross-contamination, but like some of the other people have said above, I don't make a big deal of it because worse case, I'll just eat whatever I have in my bag.

That sounds lovely! Another idea would be hummus to add to the plate with some raw veggies like carrots or cucumber to dip.

As someone who is vegan, I think the option you are offering is great. Like Jacks mentioned, if possible it might be nice to offer some hummus to them as well. I think this person is likely expecting their meal will look different from others based on dietary restrictions and allergies. It's very thoughtful of you to do all this.
