Follow up to cake vs. cupcakes: MINI cupcakes?

Mrs. Lav, on February 2, 2015 at 1:54 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

I posted late last week about cupcakes vs cake. FH loves the idea and I found an awesome bakery around the corner who gave us a reasonable quote (esp. for NJ) and free cupcakes (with a "NBD if you don't book with us...just tell some neighbors to stop by"). We tried the cupcakes and loved the variety, so we're all in at this point.

Here's my question: we have the option of standard cupcakes ($2.25 each) or mini cupcakes (99 cents each). The cupcake lady said that when people do standard and mini cupcakes, the minis always go first and caterers end up cutting the larger cupcakes. People like the minis because they can have multiple flavors, and she typically budgets 2-3 per person. But, are the mini cupcakes too birthday party? Should we stick with standard? She told us she'd dress them up with edible glitter, etc.

FYI, we do have other dessert offerings, but I don't want to stray too far from traditional wedding cake (too late?).

I definitely like the idea of having mini-cupcakes in multiple flavours. Is there any say to display it in a cute way?

Yeah, I want to get a cupcake tower or tree thing, but I think they look better with the standard-size cupcakes. I guess I could get creative with the decor? L&G, how you are you displaying yours?

@Surfergirl-- what are cake truffles and frosting shots? They sound fun/delicious, but I don't think I've seen either.

The cake truffles are like little cake balls like you would see as cake pops but they dont have the stick. and then the frosting shots are little shot glasses with different frostings layered in them.

ETA: This picture doesnt actually have the cake truffles but the frosting shots are in the middle of the platter, and then it has the mini cupcakes in the picture too

We are doing a mix of minis and regular size too! I think the mini's are cute, and easier for people to grab multiple flavors of.

We are using a variety of wood cake stands in different heights and diameters. Similar to this image but with big and little cupcakes, with our two tier cake in the middle.

I say go with the minis if you are having a lot of different flavors.

People always eat more of the small cupcakes. I think it comes down to their willingness to have a small bit of cake, vs. being too full, or not wanting to eat an entire cupcake. SO if you want to have people eat more than 1, go with mini. I don't find mini to be birthday like at all!

I'm also doing mini cupcakes in various flavors and only a small cake for pictures that we are taking home.
